I've got a 99 hilander sport model. 3.4 v6, no locker (yet), auto tranny, power everything. I love it. It now has 220,xxx miles. If it ever wears out, I'll rebuild the engine and keep driving it.

I've got a '99 Highlander model with the 5 speed and e-locker. They are out there but as time goes on finding a clean one with lower miles will be harder. Thanks for helping possible resale.

This is a common misconception about the AWD feature and 3rd gens. This is no electronic wizardry here. It relies upon a center differential (viscous coupler) to allow for slippage in the drivetrain. I think a lot of folks confuse this with traction control of the '01-02 models.

I think the "electronic wizardry" they are referring to is the electric switch that puts the T-case into 4wd (a pushbutton on the limited models and I think on all of the 01-02 models as well.) Those can and do fail (take a look at Yotatech or other Toyota boards and you'll see the threads from people saying "Help! My T-case switch doesn't work!")

There is also the VSC/TRAC system which is notorious for leaving a vehicle immobile at the worst possible time. As I understand it, the VSC/TRAC on the 4th gen 4runners is much better but, again, go to any of the Toyota boards and you'll see LOTS of complaints about VSC/TRAC on 3rd gen 01-02 4runners.

No need to hold out for all the bells an whistles. Decide which is more important, the stock locker (which also comes with 4.30 gearsets in most cases) or the manny tranny. Lockers can be fitted after the fact. The autos are not too bad, and my wife would not be able to drive mine otherwise.

The 2.7L is a good engine, but the 3.4L is a great match for this truck. Overall, I would recommend to start with a 3.4 with a manual and go from there...
