Can she drive manual or not?
I'm going to play devil's advocate and say it will have far more value to everyone and everything involved if she sees the light regarding a 5 speed...
I just got my 1st auto 4Runner (98) and it's kinda boring to drive. If all else fails, I suggest trading 'runners with someone who is lusting for a stick shift.

Not only different transmission, but a different transfer case as well. If I'm not mistaken, the 22R-E transfer cases were gear driven and the 3.0L t-case were chain driven. It would behoove you to look into the rear end, as the rear end on the 3.0 would have been a larger / heavier duty rear end, the same that came with the 22R-TE (turbo'd 22R-E)

According to the guide on 4x4wire, the auto trans behind the 22RE was the A340F 4-speed, which was found in model year 1984-1995 Trucks and 4runners (4x4wire shows it running until 1999 but I don't believe the 22RE was offered that long--I suspect a mistake). The 3VZE had an integrated, non-separable transmission/transfer case assembly behind it, the A340H. I don't believe the A340H would mate with a 22RE.
I agree--it'd be kind of a shame to swap in auto into a 1st-gen. The 5-speed makes much better use of the available power and is so much more fun to drive.

Well, I disagree about the auto vs manual as far as "fun", but they are correct on both the 3.0 and the power issue. You can't swap in a 3.0 auto on a 22re. Need to find a 4 banger with an auto. Also, the 22re really is pretty sad with an auto, unless you gear the diffs pretty low. You won't feel much power until you wrap it out, and it likes to pull at 3500-4k, which the auto's don't do very well. My 87 loved 3rd gear at 60-65. It would actually hold speed on the hills and passes of CO at that, but it was running at 4-4.2k (4.88 diffs on 33's).
I also can't remember, but I think you need the auto computer as well, but I could be wrong there, the 22re may still not have any computer control. If you want to do the swap, look at buying an entire auto trans truck, so you can pull parts as needed.
However, I'd seriously consider a different truck for all the work this is going to take.

Or, if you want to that bad. I am about to do a five speed swap into my 86 auto. The tranny is in decent condition, but if you want it PM me and we can maybe work something out. I can provide the complete wiring harness also...:sombrero:

Well Im picking up a 89 4runner, SR5, 3.slo, 4x4 with Auto. rust free, chassis is nice/clean shape, White on white, but looks like your inside of a red velvet cake. (red plush interior). The body is very straight and like I said rust free. My g/f said she'll suck up driving stick while I get the stuff together for a 3.4/(auto/manual) swap, depends how easy she learns stick.
But.......
doing so will I need to find a tranny and transfer case out of a 4 banger to use, being how the current tranny/tcase are one piece?
If I go the Auto route should I use the trans from the donor motor? If so , will the 4banger Tcase (that I would have to find) bolt to a auto chevy trans?

the transfer case can be removed from the 3.0 auto and manual.
the auto, you cant just remove the tcase for anything else unless you do an adapter to run a gear driven t case. before it will work you will have to take the automatic trans apart i think to change some things
