So the Open Box Buy Fridge deal is looking better every day.

Where on your 1st Generation 4Runner would you install your 2nd deep cycle battery to make it run?

And which deep cycle battery would you use?

This isn't my install, but it was nicely done (two batteries under the backseat area)

You really need to read this post about my history of this truck and how I found it online 10 + years later on Yotatech in Minneapolis after selling it in Dallas,TX.

I flew from Austin, TX to pick it up and my girlfriend and I drove it back.

When I sold it, the truck was stock and not running very well, but it was very clean and rust free.

What a great story, thanks for sharing, and I am glad to see that the 4Runner is/has been in good hands!

Thanks...Toyotero.

I don't want to put a battery under my truck because at times I have water crossings.

I've considered finding a small battery that can fit into one of our two rear side pockets.

Like this one.

Check the dimensions, it's small. Does a small battery like this have the power to run a fridge? And run it for an acceptable length of time?

As long as the battery is sealed (like that one or an Optima) you can mount it in any position or get it wet. I wouldn't try to operate it underwater, but I don't think that dunking it in water every now and then would hurt. A bigger concern than the battery itself would be the connections and drainage of the mounting hardware. Now if you are into mudding, that might be different :p

It would be nice to have the second battery in the wall in the back too. That's how it is set up in my BMW 740, with a long, short and skinny battery.

The specs on that battery look a bit small to me, for example compare it to a Optima Yellow Top
Especially CCA at 0*F : 750 vs 220.

I am glad you enjoyed it. Its funny. When I bought the truck back, I didn't know what I was getting into. In my eyes, the truck was finished since the guy I bought it back from had put on armor, new engine, locked and re geared front and back, lifted, 4.7 low range....However, since 07 when I bought it back I have added crossover steering, new rear springs, extra armor all the way around, performance head, intake and alternator, and new springs for the front are on order. Lesson learned: these trucks are never finished.

Yep . . . ..
- swapped in the 7MGE 4-5 yrs ago, now I'm giving a Mercedes OM617 turbo diesel some serious thought
- thought I was done with the suspension until I saw the Blazeland LT suspension
- thought I was done with the bumpers 4 years ago, but I still keep messing with them now and then
. . . . really only finished with a truck when you finally sell it

We'll be coming through Oklahoma City in a few weeks on our way to SW Colorado (moving) . . . .

If/when I decide on another engine, I'm gonna try to sell my current set-up as a plug-n-play swap (all harnesses were made to plug in to existing harnesses, everything else is bolt in)

AHHHH What a beauty to see all these nice 1st Gen's... Nice trucks guys. As far as the OME suspension goes, after running numerous 70 and 80 ser. Cruisers with full OME kits (from the DEALER!!!!!) I knew that I'd be going to them for my own Sus. when I got home and got a Toy 4x4 (Or hell ANY truck they make suspension for should take advantage of them)... Any way I have the OME dakar rear-springs (Forget wich strength but I belive the HD's), waiting on the Torsion Bars, full OME shocks and the steering stab. and I can honestly say between this and the 33's my truck rides like a dream and handles a load very very well. It actualy feels alot better on the road with the full load of camping gear and "personell" ;) on board (empty the springs are a bit stiff, but hey it's a truck, so adding the load makes the body/chasis able to actuate the springs as they're supposed to).

keep the beautiful trucks coming...

Cheers

cup holder

Thought I'd share this with the group. I've always wanted cup holders in the 'runner, it's the one thing that's bugged me about the 1st gens. It bugs my wife too, and since she'll be the one driving it 2300 miles I thought I'd remedy that before we left. Materials needed for the cup holder: 4" length of 3" diameter drain pipe, a 3" drain pipe coupler, a 3" drain pipe end cap and 2 carriage bolts to attach it. For the mount I just bent up some 1.25" wide flat stock that I had laying around and bolted it to the seat track

the cup holder itself it pretty simple - slide the end cap and coupler over the piece of drain pipe and add glue. I ended up adding a rib to the metal arm to stiffen it up and reduce vibration while driving

in 4th gear - it only gets in the way going into reverse (very minor) and I can still get to the rear window switch underneath it

Since these aren't the stock seats this might not work for everyone, but it would be simple enough to run one leg to the inboard seat mount bolt and run a second elsewhere to give it stability.

Here's what I came up with to fix the "no place to put the cup/can" in an 88 4Runner that I had.

cup%20holder.JPG

It velcro-ed down into place behind the shifter so I still had access to the cubby below it.

cup%20holder%20under.JPG

I don't have a photo of it in place, but you can imagine how it was. I plan to build a double-wide one for my 86 4Runner that'll fit two cans side by side if possible.
