We leave for a 7 day trip to Oregon in about 2 hours. So I'll have a better idea of what we like and dont . Should be a good trip my wife has never seen the Ocean and my daughter sees it every day. This way I get to spend more time with my daughter and my wife gets to see the ocean and where I spent the first 27 years of my life.
Well its been 2weeks but finally got time to post.
We need a bit more padding. After the third night our memory foam was not good so a one inch foam was added to the bottom. Other wise it was great. My wife is sorting pictures so I'll post some on Tuesday when return from the family trip. Well see how she tows the flat bed two quads and a ram charger.
Well the old super duty has not skipped a beat. The Maxxis tires have been great have 10k on them now. The whole set up is good. I do have a Warn hub that will half lock occasionally. The topper is off right now been trying some campers and such.
Did replace the front shocks and add a rear winch.
Its been on tow truck duty. Did pull the topper and install a tonucover. I have been hauling pipe and bobcats as of late doing some roust about work.
We have gone to the lake the last few days its been fun. Today however it was not so much fun. My tyranny shift cable has stretched no big deal till today. As we where leaving I saw we forgot a chair. Well I tossed her up in park jumped out and watched it roll in the lake. I apparently did not get it all the way in park but no big deal I have 2 winches. Well found that the front warn did not want to work. I thought you have one for the rear just pull off that tree come out in a different spot no big deal.
I also use a multi mount set up for my Warn Zeon 10s... I hadn't thought about possible results of a side pull. I guess it's good to learn from other folks experience...
So, how far of center where you pulling when the mount bent?
With the camper my wife and I have been doing a lot of trips. We learned many things.
First we love and hate our camper more hate than love. We love the space to stand up sit inside when weather gets bad. The hate comes from its size and drag on fuel mileage.
We have been discussing what the best option would be. I had talked about a U haul box like pappawheele. My only problem is I am not able to dedicated this truck 100% to travel just yet. We talked about a pop up camper and our latest travels this could work. So we went shopping and found a few that would work. On the way out we saw this sweet little A frame pull behind trailer.
Well my wife fell in love with the hard side and ease of set up. So the plan is to build my own and make it work on a flat bed.
First step is to build a low profile flat bed. Flat with no or small wheel wells. Then I need to build the A frame box. I plan to build the lower section out of 1/8 of 3/16 steel. This Is for durability as I still wheel my truck. The top folding section will be framed in aluminum keep the weight down. The A frame walls will be plastic and foam insulation.
I like this over a conventional pop up for a few reasons. First it sits lower I can see over it. Second I can remove it and still use it.
Everything has pros and cons. But I like what your thinking. I'd do the flatbed thing on mine- but my trucks in good shape and all original and it's old. I hate to mess with it. But I can't use my pop up out of my truck- unless I mount it on a trailer or or set it on something. I see where your going with this. Good luck.
My plan is to mount tor flat bed directly to the frame. Honestly I planned to run 1.75 herw from the front to the wheel well. I want to drill 6 holes in the lower body of my truck. The tubing will pass threw to the frame and be mounted with 4 bolts per leg. This should add rigidity to the frame and give me rock sliders. Then I can bolt the fat bed to the sliders and the frame making it one structure.
My question is will this add stress to my frame and start cracks. I use my truck off road not a rock crawler but it gets used as one.
Ya my roommate loves me I have a cut up u haul truck that just won't work due to size. There is a camper that I might pull parts out of and 2 scouts a Nissan and parts.
The plan is a pop up a frame. Wife wants some thing more than tent between her and the bears. I am worried about storage but will cross that bridge.
