2001 D2 SD for first vehicle

I'm going to look at this for my daughter this morning. This will be her first vehicle. It definitely has some issues, most door actuators don't work, cruise control doesn't work, climate control assembly is broken and won't stay in the dash....those are a few of the problems...but it has a new driveshaft, tires, and only 130k on it. Even better...it's from a reputable guy that I've known for a long time, he bought it off the original owner for a father son project then his son lost interest, so he has been Dailey driving it for several months.

Personally, I would steer clear of a D2/P38 for anyone, particularly a younger person with limited mechanical experience. I’ve owned and worked on quite a few Rovers for customers, and the D2’s are by far the worst in terms of the number and severity of the problems. Head gasket issues are just the beginning of it, at best it will be frustrating and expensive, at worst it will be downright dangerous.

The problem with major engine issues in these, is that any used motor you find to swap in is likely to suffer the same fate.

I’m not saying there isn’t an occasional good one out there, but it’s not worth the risk IMO.

I definitely agree about the engine issues, head gasket, slipped liners etc... There's a lot of things that can go wrong....and that's with any vehicle when on a budget for a first time driver. Is a D2 the smartest decision ... probably not, but within our price range a Subaru, Honda, Toyota, with 200k + is equally as much of a gamble. Idk we will check it out, if there's too many issues than we definitely will look for something else.

What it needs....
Window regulator all around...or there's an electrical issue
Door actuators...all around....or again an electrical issue
Wiper motors
Both Bumper covers
Won't shift into low
Had a coolant issue and a mechanic told him to put stop leak in it...fixed the issue...but for how long
Every light imaginable on the dash is on...3 amigos are my least concern. Hard flash check engine light.

....what else
No new tires
Interior is trashed
And I can stick my hand inside of the rusted out part of the frame.

As much as I’m not a Jeep guy and XJ’s bore me to death, they are hard to not consider on a limited budget for a younger driver. They may still need some wrenching but parts are available and cheap, and I don’t know of a lot of major/complicated issues with them.

Might be worth it to get an OBD2 reader. On a vehicle like this it will save you a pile. Decent ones can dig deep in the ECUs.
It doesn't have to be LR specific so you can use it on whatever vehicle your daughter ends up with and your wife's car. That way, she won't beef over the price.

Pretty sure it won't help with the rust though.
