What's grinding? Starter when you try to start it or the engine? What are you doing when you hear the grinding? The more info you can give us, the more likely we will be able to help you troubleshoot it. Remember we weren't there to see what was happening so we can't assume anything...

Ok. My starter was bad. I had to turn the key like ten times. Click click then it would start. I changed the starter. Now this nose is there that was not there. It sounds like metals are grinding. Or the gears are not lining up. I took out the new starter and reinstalled it. Same thing. I turn the car on and checked were the sound was coming from. It's coming from the transmission area where the starter was at. The starter I got is from autozone and its dura last. Is it possible that its not disengaging? My English is not to good. I hope this makes sance.

Yes, your English translation is fine. Thank you for trying to speak in English.

Has this happened before? I suspect it could be your flywheel has a few missing teeth. The flywheel is a large ring gear at the back of your engine that your starter solenoid engages so the starter is able to turn your engine when you try and start it. Either that or your solenoid gear is missing teeth.

That's strange. Do you know if the gear on the solenoid is just slightly smaller than the one on your old starter?

I haven't replaced a starter on a montero but make sure that there isn't a spacer on the old starter that you forgot to use.

Okey after all said and done, the starter autozone give me was the wrong one. I took it to my macanic and he checked and found out that, there is a build date you have to check the part number by. The right one for my montero is from a montero sport. He also changed some pullys and a Tensioner and it to was from a montero sport. Now my montero runs with out any Noise. While at it I had a top valve cover leak, I fixed that to. Spark plugs and wires where changed to. I'm happy with the work he did. Thank you guys for your help.

P.s. have any of you guys had a problem with a build date before ?
