2002 RR resurection

It's alive!

drove the truck for the first time today. just to the gas station and i didnt even get it over 40 mph. it's tall. its not wobbley. now to get it registered.
its got old man emu coils 764 in front. 781 in the rear. i put front OME RR shocks on back and used OME FZJ 80 rear shocks up front. i had to use bushings to get to the proper I.D. for the bolts and they are running upside down. after speaking with some ARB folks i now know this is sub-optimum. not the end of the world but not perfect. so they will run this way for a while and if they are just horrible then i will figure something else out.
i used the rear sway bar end links from a jeep TJ to extend my links about 3.5 inches. this required hogging the holes in the sway bar and chassis out to 1/2 inch, no biggie, and new bolts.
i used spacers and longer bolts to stand the brackets for brake line off a bit and gain the needed clearance on them.
i tied all the hieght sensors up out of the way and disconected the air pump and pulled its relay. oddly enough this made the abs and traction control lights go away? think they will come back, only time will tell.
did some other misc. maintence as well, eng oil and filter (required 24 in. 1/2 drive breaker bar to remove drain plug), air filter (never been changed i think) pollen filters (orig as well) rear wiper, both headlight wipers, flushed PS fluid. i also have brake fluid, spark plugs and diff oils sitting and waiting to get renewed still.
so next is HVAC stuff. there is no AC or fan blowing air to speak of.
i had better go get busy, i want to make it to AF canyon soon. http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=59772

Do you think its because it probably disconnected the circuit and disabled your abs and tc?

.... not that its a bad thing to lose that

there are not as many posts on the boards i read by you or marc or some of the others that i used to see a lot. hopefully I can hook up with some wasatch rovers once this project is back on the road.

Yea we haven't posted or done tooo many runs together. Marc has been super busy with other projects and I've been busy...building. lol We've been kinda laying low.... We'll do a run soon ;)

Good job on the P38

sorry i have not posted progress in a while. you can follow along closer over at disco web.
i pulled the dash apart and changed heater core o-rings. i took it to Tom at GBR and her pulled the HVAC codes( thanks tom you were great!) there were tons of codes hopefully from the dead battery/jumpstarting/sitting long time. cleared them and there were just stalled rh blower codes.
pulled the rh blower out and took it apart. pulled the brushes and cleaned them up and cleaned the comutator. they were worn at least half way, but i think this rover lived in a very hot enviroment so it is likely that they ran full tilt quite a bit. hopefully they last a few more years. i cleaned the transitors and full speed relay assembly as well, it was very dirty. i dont think the pollen filters had ever been changed on this truck.
I wrung out the wires from the underhood relay box down to the blower connector and also checked the grounds for the blower, all were good. reassembled everything and it didnt work. i jumpered a ground to the blower neg connection and it started. came inside to study the wiring diagrams went back out a few min later and now it works great, blows very well and adjusts speed correctly. i just need to reassemble all the duct work now. i still have the testbook though.
I also found the air con evaporator temp sensor probe broke and wiggly but it looks intact still. anyone have any idea about resistance values for this so i can test it to see if its working still?
I picked up a couple u-joints for the front shaft while i was at Great Basin Rovers, the one next to the x-case has some slop in it and I am sure the lift is not helping with the vibes. I will try new u-joints and see if that cures the vibe, if not i guess i will need a new shaft.

I replaced my RR's drive shaft with a Tom Woods www.4xshaft.com Double Cardan. I did not suffer any drivetrain vibrations with my lift but each RR seems to be different in this respect, mine had lasted for 120k. I think they now come without the alloy adapter.
Replacing the front ds on a P38 is a surprisingly awkward job, the LR prop shaft tool makes it a little easier.
Depending on the quality of the UJ's it may be worth while to dismantle them before fitting and packing with grease, i have seen some failed LR UJ's where the grease had not reached all areas.

Ahh... So that's you I see like every week? You've got quite a bit of lift under that thing.

yep. i have seen you at that corner, or on the freeway or around a dozen times it seems. i swear i am not some kind of stalker freak but it was kinda funny when i first confirmed in my mind that was your disco a few months ago by the fabric on the car seat. i also saw your red DII coming down big cottonwood a few months ago in october before the first snow, and that front bumper is beautiful. i wish i still had my red DII. and it had that bumper on it.

it's kinda high, a little too high. it needs some bumpers and sliders to compress the springs a little.

i dont know why but i cant post any more pics, i keep getting a forum error message for the last couple nights.

The only electronic system on a P38 that would leave me feeling uneasy about taking one into the backcountry is the security system. I have seen that fail, leading to a no-start condition or a vehicle lockout. There are ways to solve this. If I were travelling, I would carry a small/portable limited function LR diagnostic tool with me that had security and BECM capability.

It's great to see someone using one of these trucks; they are rugged, durable machines.

Absolutely. Something I've been meaning to do about this is have it all turned off - alarm, immobilizer, etc. From what I've read, this can be done with a Rovacom/Faultmate (and I've got a Testbook :( ). I'm still not sure exactly how much this would do as the engine ECU and the BeCM need to remain in synch for the engine to start - something to explore someday.

If the EAS is up to scratch, BTW, it is absolutely off road capable (I know it's too late here, but I'm on a mission :) ). In order to make mine failsafe, I have a manual controller that allows me to pump up the springs regardless of what the EAS ECU says. The EAS does need maintenance and checking, tho - in contrast to coil springs that usually just sag at some point.

So where are the 'after' pics, David?

In this case the EAS was most definitly not up to scratch. all the air bags were trashed and the pump would not run. why? i dont know. the relay was fine. but i didnt really dig into it further, I just "fixed" it for good. if the springs eventually sag they will be replaced. Just the same as if you had a leaking bag that would be replaced. Well almost the same, I can still drive home normally on a sagging spring.

here is some more details on DWEB

ome springs and shocks to go in. 764 in front 781 in the back. as Ben has noticed its probably a little too tall.

bushings that i used to adapt the TLC shocks, probably the source of a small annoying rattle.

i am not sure why but all these pics that are working are from my iphone. the ones i have taken with my camera wont seem to upload even though they are below the size limit, anyone have any ideas or sugestions?

Good luck. You have put a lot of time and effort into getting this truck running again. Hopefully, you can get the image upload problems fixed.
