I've had a delima with the rear bumper on the Suburban, I don't think I can make a rear bumper that looks as good or functions better then the factory one.. Before I take the rear bumper off to do rust repair on the quarters I'm tacking up a tire carrier swing on the factory bumper to see if I can web it into the bumper and make it strong enough before I build a bumper from scratch.. after some mock up I think I can make it work.. Only time will tell though

You should be able to, the bumper bracket is just a couple inches inboard of that pivot location and you should be able to mod or even replace the bracket with something more substantial that can take the load of a rear carrier hung in that location.
Either a cut a clearance hole or even a U-slot in the bumper metal so it fits around the pivot mount. Or do those pivots work with a socket down below the top skin of the bumper?

I put a radio antenna mount there and tied in an angle bracket attached to the bumper brackets to help stiffen things up. didn't do me much good though, with mount spring or without, it's still a horribly turbulent area at my highway speeds. Anything over 70mph and a 4' Firestik was gyrating and whacking my back glass so hard I was afraid it would break the glass.

This is the spindle I'm using Rayra, I ground it down to sit in the curvature of the bumper. I drilled holes and spot welded it into the bumper, I will web it into the bumper with gussets on the sides and replace the factory corner support bracket with something stronger... Probably extra 5x2 box tubing from the rockers.... Then I'll just paint the bumper to match the front one and Rockers.. Hammered grey..

Yeah that'll work well. So the center pin is fixed and mean to be welded to a support structure and the outer sleeve spins and gets the swing away welded to it, correct?

Could the core pin itself go down into a sleeve - maybe keyed or D shaped - and be locked in with a bolt? I'd really rather have a swing away for a 2nd spare etc, but don't want it permanent on my vehicle. I'd just mount it for off-road trips.

Yes that's the way it works, and I'm not sure about making it a temp mounted... There's a lot of weight and cantilever when it swings out.. That's why the shaft is so long and solid, to help with the weight...

Yes those are a great weld on fitting. I remember when I wanted to get some for my bumper project they were all sold out. The only suplier wanted $200 a piece for them. I used a big bolt instead... I look forward to seeing how they work out for you. Please post some pics of your progress. Cheers, Chilli..?

Looking forward to your bumper build solution. No one here has come up with an affordable swing out carrier for our trucks. Looking forward to your progress.

Body work is not my strong suit, but it's gotta be done.... Lower quarters were not too bad, the rockers are going to be a different story.

Thanks Chilli.... The door jam lip I'm welding my box tubing rocker too is at an angle, The jeeps I do have a flat jam and I can spot weld right down into the box tubing.. So I spot welded a piece of 1 1/2 inch wide by 1/8 in thick metal underneath the door jam. That will give me something I can burn the box tubing into thats solid and not sheet metal... Will it work? I don't know.... LOL

No probably not ejwebb, it already sticks out 1 1/2 inches and that's more then enough protection for no harder then this will get wheeled.. Plus it will be harder to slide over and your pants will always be dirty... Now steps are a maybe... just not sure yet, I'm a "design as I go" kind of guy...
