2005 Tacoma oil change mess...

Based on the responses, I might be 20 years behind on my oil change method.

Drain the main pan, leave plug off and bucket below. Turn the car on for 1 second to turn the engine over. Now the oil in the filter has drained and more oil has drained from the pan. No mess when pulling the filter off. Hope my truck doesn't blow up.

Good question...is turning the car over after the oil drained recommended...who says yeah...

On my 4 Runner I use a 1 Qt oil container to catch the oil.
When I finished I spray brake cleaner to clean up any oil that would attrach dust etc.

Do the change in the morning if you can, that way the oil drains out of the filter over night. So far this has worked every time, never a mess or hot oil to deal with.

unscrew the filter and let the oil fall into the catch pan, that is why it's there and there is no way around it.

I use a small diameter hose that I had and I put it around the spigot that the factory give you underneath, it all drains to a catch pan underneath. Alternatively you could make a "catch" with a cup and a coathanger and hang it from the catch pan. I love where the oil filter is, great job on this toyota.
