2006 1st-Gen Tundra Doublecab Build

I have the Camburg UCA's on my 05 Tundra. Last night when we found a place to set up camp, I wiped the uniballs clean and shot them with some WD-40 white lithium spray. Squeak is long gone. Saw on some other forums that this can become a regular bit of PMCS, depending on your locale and the sort of elements your rig will be exposed to.

Everything was working out great with the Toytec BOSS kit but there was some trouble in paradise...

Discovered that my front boots were chucking grease like crazy. Even with the diff drop kit, the 2.5" coilovers were stressing the angle. The boots closest to the front diff were affected.

Toytec mentioned that this is sometimes a result of old stock boots that have a stiff compound. If they have been level for years and years and suddenly need to deal with any kind of sustained angle they get mighty loose with weak stock clamps.

So, the solution was to first lower the coil-overs down about an inch. Toytec was great about getting me the spanner wrenches.

I also had new boots installed from Off-Road Solutions:

They have a much softer compound than the stock boots (especially after spending years as an AZ vehicle).

So far, all is well. No more gnarly grease flying everywhere. Clean as can be after about 300 miles.

Good to hear about the boss kit. I just got back from a 1500 mile road trip around oregon and my boss kit on the sequoia worked great, even on the dunes. About the boots, have you tried hose clamps around the ends where the boots attaches to the diff? After having grease all over the place with my tundra I used the hose clamps and never had a problem. That reminds me I have to it to the sequoia now!

I thought about the hose clamp mod but I go to some pretty remote places and did not want something I constantly had to keep an eye out for.

Thus far, the new ORS flexible boots seem to be just the ticket.

ORS also sells an orange high angle boot but the instructions seem to call for some modifications which I wasn't quite comfortable with.

This is the broken shock that led me to doing the Toytec kit...

I got around to getting the fridge jacketed...

Made a cabinet/table thingy for the bed which is working out well...

The solar system has worked just great. It has been in total stand-alone operation for months now. I simply leave the fridge on full-time at 29 degrees...

It's nice to be at a stage where things are settling in...

I always enjoy your updates. Very ingenious setup.

Does your ARB fridge sit below the bedsides? I guess I could go measure my own but I was debating if I can stick my fridge back there and still have it covered by the Retrax Tonneau cover I'm picking up this week...

Not sure if you mentioned it or not, I just skimmed your thread looking for it, what leafs are you running in the rear? I suspect a progressive AAL?

Very nice build you have going, there! I actually woke up this morning thinking about a solar/stand alone system for the fridge I want to put in my 4runner, which is why I joined the forum today. Haha, and boom, right before my eyes is the nicest example I could have thought of! Also searching some DIY fridge slider stuff, etc that this forum covers a little better than T4R. Glad I thought to check this forum out, its awesome so far

Thanks for the kind words. Coming from the guy with some of the best build threads on the whole forum, that means a lot!

My 47L ARB fridge seems to sit about an inch above the bed rails. However, I have it sitting on top of a 3/4" plywood base and then about a 1/4" of carpet. If your tonneau has a small bit of rise to it, you should be fine.

The add-a-leafs are all part of the Toytec BOSS kit. Very pleased with them. They come with very beefy U-bolts and the whole 9 yards....

That's uncanny!

Glad it could be of help. I got a lot of great input from fellow forum members.

I'm not all that far from the 'Springs if you want to arrange to see the set-up first-hand.

We had an 06 DC Limited 4WD for my contracting company, was very sad when we turned it back in from the lease and the new body styles were out! Bought an Airstream B190 thinking it would be the ultimate easy duty over-lander but living in a resort town having more than 2 cars gets complicated and expensive. Now I am back on the hunt for another DC that I can set up very similar to your build, would love to find a Wildernest or Flippac but I also happened to see a Bigfoot slide in that looked pretty sweet and it could actually live in my garage when not in use, where as the Airstream is over 9 feet tall and know where close to fitting in a garage. Pretty sad to let the Airstream go but have to be practical.

Yeah, I'd say that based on the number (and quality!) of the various 1st gen Tundy build threads, they are gaining a cult following :) (are you listening, vendors???)

I'm sure when you're ready you can find a great platform to build upon for about $15K. Keep your eye on the Glenwood Springs car outlets. A lot of decent-looking doublecabs seem to show up there for some reason.
