2006-2007 Chevy/GMC Van Build Input Appreciated!

Hi all!

This is my first post and was really hoping to get some input on what I should do for my next vehicle. I'm wanting a 2006-2007 Chevy / GMC Van (Savana/Express) with the 6.6 duramax. My fiance and I are weekend warriors, every weekend we are driving minimum 2 hours in any given direction to go rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, or skiing. We're getting sick of putting away wet tents then re assemble at home to dry it out, or arriving late to campgrounds and missing the cut of time to get in, or more importantly we're looking to save some money using free camping approved sites and sleeping in the front of our current vehicles is getting annoying. The van will be my daily as well.

I've always loved the idea of a duramax quigley 4x4 conversion, but I'm wondering if I was to purchase a 06-07 express/savana duramax with 150-180k on it, would it be worth doing the quigley set up or would it be a bad investment? I know it's all in what I want and i should not be looking at it as an investment, but I'm curious if I was to set the van up with the conversion, in your opinion would I be able to ask a bit more for something like that in case I had to sell for unforeseen reasons do they traditionally not hold there value?

Reasons for wanting the 6.6 Duramax, living in Ma they are the last model diesel you can set a custom tune and better exhaust for MPG. Also more milage, better resale? I'm not really interested in a promaster/ sprinter setup although I know they are a very nice setup.

Again thank you for your thoughts!

I just saw one for sale here in Alaska with the entire rear passenger area stripped of all its seats. An 07 model with 6.6 Duramax and a Quigley conversion for just under $30k. I don't recall the mileage but for something like this it's usually irrelevant if it's been built up already, in my opinion. They hold a lot of value, at least here if they have that 4x4 conversion. The ford e350 vans with similar equipment and 4x4 conversion go for about 10k less here. Just fyi

Hi Zach, thank you for the heads up on pricing. Was the van in Alaska on this forum or craigslist or a local dealer? Any thoughts on finding it? I’m debating buying a Chevy and having the quigley installed but already done I’d be very curious to look at the van you speak of. Thanks again!

Quigly is one of the more expensive options, though converting a van to 4wd is not going to be inexpensive no matter how you go about it. :)

The dmax vans are pretty nice. I ran one for a while for work and it got around 18mpg.
You could also consider finding a late 90's or early 00's van with the 6.5l in it. The 6.5l will probably return slightly better mileage than a dmax van, and it'll cost a LOT less to fix if anything goes wrong... They have plenty of power unless you plan to tow a LOT of weight...

I don't know where you are, but I would look from a van from out west, as it'll be rust free and won't have the electrical issues that a midwest or east coast van is sure to have.
