2006 LR3 w/150k needs new engine & transmission

I've put over 60k miles on our LR3 and have enjoyed every mile. It was a very well maintained dealer loaner before we purchased it. All of the typical replacements have been done by the dealer. The transmission began to slip so we planned on having it fix but kept driving it while we were looking at different options. One day we heard a loud knocking sound and pulled over. The engine still runs and drives but something is broken inside. So our options are buy a used low mileage engine and fix the tran or sell it for parts. We use this for camping and other outdoors activities. This is not a daily driver but we planned on keeping it for the long haul. If these items are replaced do we now have a LR3 that's in better shape than just buying another used one with 80-90k miles on it? I would really like to get another 100k out of it. What do you think?

Have you taken it to a mechanic yet? If so, what did they say? If not, you have made lots of assumptions. The engine and the transmission more than likely both didn't fail simultaneously.

Yes. We took it to two. Both locations service our other two Land Rovers. They both had the same reaction as soon as the engine was started. The transmission went out about 6 months before the engine.

I would not hesitate to swap the Engine / Tranny with a lower mileage model from a scrap yard. Just don't pay more for it than another vehicle. I'm not sure why you'd drive with a bad tranny for 6 months, and it seems highly suspect the engine would also go.. Sounds like a head gasket or something? It seems odd two shops would listen to it and not have a pretty good opinion.

If you're scraping it I might be interested depending on the body condition.

What do you mean by slip in the transmission?

Do the revs bounce up and down or do you get judder under load going up hills etc?

Both. When accelerating from a stop it feels like its starting in third gear and while driving it has very little power to go up hills.

That's torque converter failure.
You can change the torque converter without changing the gearbox.
Mine is doing the same stuff so is getting a replacement one fitted soon.

I was quoted a price of £3404.40 from a ZF specialist.
That was for a refurbished gearbox and torque convertor, plus oil cooler and new lines, fitting and vat.

I've been quoted £1059 to have a torque convertor fitted, new oil and filter, plus fitting and vat.

There is a difference, so would be good to check it out as the saving could cover a fair bit of whatever is wrong with the engine.

Lr3 have dropped in price drastically in the last 6 months. Not sure why, but you can find them around 10k. If you are going to do the engine swap, I would say go for it, but if you are paying a shop, I would consider buying a lower mileage truck and transferring over any mods.

But doesn't seem right that both could go at the same time. Where in Ca are you located?

The problem in the transmission is internal to the transmission, with regard to 3rd gear, I doubt it is the torque converter. Evidently the torque converters on the TDV6 go out regularly, not so much on the Petrol versions. They both use different torque converters.

The issue with the tdv6 is that ZF say they need the oil flushed every 60-75k. Land Rover have never said anything about getting the oil changed.
Very few people knew about this so lots have run for years without knowledge.

So, go down the years and people like me pick up one that's at 100k, run it and then find out the oil should have been changed way before it was bought.

The trans stuff sounds torque related to me as like i said, i have the same issues and that's what mine has been diagnosed as.

Have you had the engine stripped to find out what's wrong with it.

I've been telling people to change the oil every 60-75k on the transmissions for years. I supply a lot of diffs and drive train parts.

While on the subject, differential fluids every 30k miles or so, transfer case every 60k miles as well.

The shop found a engine with about 34k miles on it. They won't charge me labor since they are a client on mine and it will be a favor for a favor. Obviously additional parts will be needed as well. They will check the transmission when they get started. I haven't give the green light yet but it looks like having a pretty new engine and transmission will have me in pretty good shape. The exterior and interior are in excellent condition. I've already replaced the compressor and the bags so that's good as well as most of the other parts that wear out on the front suspension. I guest the differential would be the next big thing to go. I will have that serviced while they are at it. What else?

I would love to get another 100k miles out of it. Are there any concerns with electrical in these trucks and having to replace?
