trans rebuild

New main shaft and 5th gear showed up Friday. So we went after it today.
Its not very simple to swap main shafts. A lot of pressing and gear and bearing swapping. The shift forks and rods are like a jig saw puzzle. There are like 6 detent balls and springs. Everything has to go together in a very certain order.

Anyhow here are some pics of the inside of the 05+ Tacoma 5spd. I have talked to one other person who says he has had the same noise as I had. A sort of roaring while off load during driving. Anytime you let off the gas it makes that noise. I thought all along it was a bearing turns out it was 5th gear chattering against the shaft and trying to strip the splines.

If there is truly an issue with that gear in these transmissions we will know soon enough. Maybe Toyota will do something about it eventually. Mine started this noise at like 65,000 miles.

I also bolted up the FJC tcase to the trans. It works just fine. Some bending will be needed to the tcase shifter to make it work with the trans shifter as they are very close to one another. But it appears it will come up through the same area as the trans shifter and only mild trimming will be need to add room through the floor board.

A very busy day. I sure hope the rebuilt trans will last longer this time. Though I doubt it since the replacement gear from Toyota was exactly the same as what came out.

The pics show the trans all apart. then the shift fork side.
Also the trans going together in the cases. At last the FJ tcase bolted on with the shifters installed.

Dont want to junk up your nice thread. :) Hoping they get the alignment done tonight, the Automotive program at the school I work for mounted the tires and is doing the alignment for me and hopefully find out what the noise in my front end is coming from.

Build thread here:

oh don't worry about junking my thread.
Once you start posting pics of internal trans parts people get bored, no one looks here anymore. lol

Truck looks awesome. You going to keep the side steps?
Noise in the front? Did you drop the diff?
Well remember what I said about the caster and the toe trick if its to far out. Might help.

Trans built FJC t-case installed

So after a painful transmission find. 5th gear dieing. We rebuilt it here in shop. Got it all back together and installed with a new clutch kit and the FJC t-case bolted up.

The FJC t-case shifter on the Reg Cab trucks comes up right behind the trans shifter. I only needed to trim a little to get the shifter installed and allow room to access the top bolts.

The hard part was bending and modifying the t-case shifter in a way it did not hit the trans shifter in 4low reverse combo. After hours spent bending and welding I came up with a bend that allowed for all gears in 2hi, 4hi, and 4low without interference. Best part is I didn't need to buy a new boot. A simple slit in the trans boot and both shifters come right through and it works great.
Looks good and you would never know it isn't supposed to be there. (at least I think so)

Next is some more work to the flatbed. A roof for it finally.

That is a truly neat rig you have there. I don't fallow all the tech but are you the first to put in the FJC t-case in a taco? Either way keep up the innovated work!

So was your tranny the R150f or something else? I don't know these newer trucks. And how is the FJC x-fer different from a normal j-shift x-fer frequently found behind the R150f's?

Thank you, Not the first for the Tcase others have done it before me.
I have had the wiring for the ADD front diff taken care of for a while now. All that was missing was the FJC case. Now its all in place and completely manual like an old school rig and its all Toyota.

About the only thing I have contributed to the comunity as a "first" was the researce and "first" cut of the Safari Snorkel that would work for the second gen Tacoma. Since Safari Snorkel never made one for them I found one to work and used it. Now its the one to get. TacoDoc and Kurt at CruiserOutfitters teamed up and there is a new template for installing it correctly without the trouble I went through.

To be honest Im not sure what Toyota calls the newer 5spd. But the trans I have is the 5spd for the second gen Tacoma.

As for the differences between the FJC tcase and the Tacoma tcase is its manual and electric. The FJC tcase is a good old manual j pattern case. The Tacoma case is a single rod out the back of the case that is controlled by an electric setup and a switch inside the cab. Mine broke a while back and to be honest the actuator that controls the tcase is exspensive as hell!!
So manual tcase was my fix.

You might already know this but im just repeating what I know.

Tranny Code

The transmission code for the newer 5 speeds 4WD is R155F. It is a AISIN Transmission that is the newer of the R151 and R150 line.

I really like the FJC swap, might be on the list some day soon. Do you know if the shifter will come up in a similar place on the Access Cabs?

Have you gone to smaller tires yet? Do you notice a big difference?

The access cab has bucket seats and I'm not sure the location of were it comes up.
However I would think the same place as the reg cab. The t-case shifter is very close to the trans shifter and comes up just to the rear and all that is needed is to bend it in a way that it does not interfere with the trans shifter. The console for the access cab is different but still I think it would come up inside the trans shift boot.

Here is the thread Wyatt from rocksolidtoys gave me to follow for the 4cyl5spd.
http://www.rocksolidtoys.com/forum/showthread.php?t=245

I did go from 255/85s to 235/85s and I have noticed a huge difference.
The truck drives much better and holds gears on the hwy better. Seems to like the 235s. Off road really there is not much difference, still wheels great and I think I will stick with this size for a while.

Cheers Daniel

reviving an old thread.

Well it took me another 17,000 miles to get the frame and custom cover made for my flatbed. But it was finished this past weekend and here it is.
Turned out very nice. It was harder than I had thought it would be to find a good upholsterer. But after 2 failed attempt's to get someone to help me design and build the top I found Miguel. A local guy (GA) who has a huge shop and was willing to work with me to get it sewed and designed like I wanted.
We worked on the weekends for about 2 months.
So after some slow progress here is what I came up with.
