2007 Mercedes G55 AMG

My wife bought this G-Wagon when we started breeding to protect our babies in the event of a collision, and also to never worry about getting stuck regardless of where we drove. We bought it from a member here on Expo. Purportedly we are the 3rd owners. It has been nicely dialed in for both on- and off-road travel, much more so since we've owned it and sunk $15k into chasing down every issue then repairing or replacing components. Including the list of work completed would bore the casual window shoppers here, but I'm happy to share this info.

The vehicle handles very well and is a lot of fun to drive. It goes fast. It goes anywhere. Fox shocks, 35" tires, tow hitch with wiring, roof bars, plenty of lighting, heated windshield, full-time all-wheel-drive with high- and low-gearing plus triple locking differentials, and of course the supercharged V8 are all noteworthy. If you add a new in-dash screen with Apple CarPlay you'll have a gutsier Grenadier for half the price and with none of the problems.

On the downside, this G-Wagon has a couple spots of pin stripping and a little bump near a tail light (evident in the photos) and some of the 2007-era mod cons have not aged well (rear disc changer, outdated nav app, little seat adjustment buttons next to the driver); minor quirks which give the vehicle character, in my opinion.

How about "AMG" - what does that stand for? Three German names, it turns out.

Mercedes-AMG GmbH, commonly known as AMG (Aufrecht, Melcher, Großaspach), is the high-performance subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG. AMG independently hires engineers and contracts with manufacturers to customize Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles. The company has its headquarters in Affalterbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

AMG was founded as a racing engine forge in 1967 under the name AMG Motorenbau- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (German for "AMG Engine Production and Development Limited") by former Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in Burgstall an der Murr, near Stuttgart. Großaspach is Aufrecht's birth town.

AMG models typically have more aggressive looks, higher performance, better handling, better stability and more carbon fibre than their regular Mercedes-Benz counterparts. Each AMG engine is signed by the person who built it.

The last photo from the original for-sale posting shows all three differentials locked. This is important because it demonstrates that the differential locks on this vehicle are in good working condition. Many G-Wagons go for years without engaging the differential locks which can lead to the locking mechanisms becoming stuck and requiring servicing before they will function again.

We live on a farm and frequently use the excuse of exercising the differential locks to cut across the fields. Only once did we need to engage the lockers to get out of a situation (snow).

Can this model take a winch or is it the one with the intercoolers in the way or some such? Just Curious, not a buyer yet but am considering one to replace my current ride. :)

Yes, this can take a winch on a different bull bar setup, but the intercooler would prevent a fully "hidden" winch.
