Why not a LT305/65R17/E BFG KM2?

It's only 12" wide, which is narrower than the 12.5" wide tires you were considering. Of course, it's technically only 32.5" tall, so maybe too short for what you need?

Glad you love the truck, I am starting to like it too!

I considered the 305's. In fact still considering which tires, so nothing yet new.

I did get to use the electronic four wheel drive shift in -12 temps this week and it worked well. In fact the truck over all worked well in negative double digits this week.

Did you add an extended range tank? I am looking at a 43 gallon Transferflow replacement tank for my F350...

Regarding popup campers. I chose a Hallmark after visiting their factory in Ft Lupton, CO. They are extremely well designed and have great thermal properties for winter use. Since you are on CO, I would advise a quick trip out to see the construction and finish quality. I believe that Randy is one of the owners and very helpful. By the way, the weight listed is the actual weight, not a feature I noticed with other builders. And composite fiberglass is rock solid for off road torsional twisting. Good luck

On the gas tank, I have a 38 gallon tank so I feel good there.
That should give me a 500+ mile range on the highway and I will need coffee more often than I will need gas with that range.

Hallmark campers are impressive, just pricey. Have been surfing CL thinking perhaps a used Hallmark (even if it is needs refurbishing) might be a good idea. Also went out and looked at the Northstar website last night. There is a Northstar dealer not far from the Hallmark place so we may take a road trip up there and look at both of them some Saturday.

The next RV show is the big one at the Stock Show complex the first weekend in March, we will definitely go and see Hallmarks (and everything else).

I have a spiffy little 15 foot trailer at present. It is pretty cool but limited in where you can take it (obviously). However it is kind of nice to set up and plug in and then go do what you want.

I am still debating tires so the camper is a ways off yet.

Simple update: no update on the truck. I got a new job, put my house on the market and bought an econobox so I have not been doing anything to the truck.

I'm looking forward to following your build. I just bought an older Hallmark to try out the off road camper concept with my family. Hope the new job goes well, good luck with your build.

I know you haven't done the tire thing yet, but I would seriously consider going with the BFG MT KM2's... And if you do (not to sound like a salesman), check out http://www.discounttiredirect.com. I just ordered a new set of 35x12.50 R15's for a ridiculously low price w/ free shipping (and a $50 special rebate)... Ordered them and had them within 5 days! Can't wait to try them out... (btw, I love how utterly massive a new set of tires always looks before you mount them)

I do love that new tire smell too!

I've been pretty happy with my KM2's. Not so good in subfreezing temps on ice, but other than that, very good. As far as MT's go, they have a bit of drone, but not too bad considering the size of the tread lugs. I have about 25kmi on mine and they are about half tread depth now. I might consider going to AT's after these since I have chains for when the going get's tough.

BFG's

I will almost certainly go with BFG MT's when I buy tires. Still leaning to 255/80-17's. By the way, my local Discount Tire place says they will match online prices (with shipping and mounting added to that total). I will probably price Tire Rack and take the quote and buy at Discount.

However at $3.55 a gallon the urgency to do this is less.

What has been you experience with the performance of the BFG MT's in the snow? I have been thinking of adding them to a similar rig that I am building.

Thanks.

KM2's are awesome in snow, not so good on ice unless you sipe them which is not recommended under the weight of a cummins(so says a guy at discount tire). I had mine for 2 years in Alaska and put them through a lot of different conditions. I replaced the factory rugged trails right away after they were useless in wet snow.

Take a look at the Hankook MTs. I'm running 35X12.50X17 and am really pleased! 22K so far and no discernable wear. Using ballance beads and rotate every 6K. They are a little noisier that the BFG ATs I have run previously, and they cost me 1.5 mpg over the ATs, but on and off road performance is very good...but they don't really like sand!

Winch and Recovery Class

I took Bill Burke's winch and recovery class in Slaughterhouse Gulch yesterday; pretty good. Got my winch stretched out.

Tires did well on the little bit of off road we did. All in all a good day!
