dieseltoyz, on your website you recommend the 1 KZ for the 2001-04 Toyota but not the 1 KD.

Why is that?

The 1KZ-TE (specifically KZN185) is designed for use in the 96-04 Tacoma platform. While the 1KD-FTV (D-4D) can be made to fit, the install is far more involved as the D-4D is not designed for use with the 1st gen platform. In it's stock configuration, the D-4D is also far too tall to fit into the 1st gen engine compartment as the D-4D comes standard with a top-mount intercooler. What we can do, is remove the top mount and plum a front-mount intercooler so the drivetrain will fit the platform. We have a few custom builds this year where we're putting the D-4D into the 1st gen Tacomas. They're more expensive to install as there's more customization required but they can be made to work great. -Todd

Can you just mod the hood with a scoop? Or would the rise be too much?

Thanks for the explanation Todd. So, 1KZ versus 1KD... I was concerned about torque and fuel economy. Seems that the CR of the 1 KD is superior for power/TQ and fuel economy to the 1KZ , or is that a misconception on my part; perhaps the differences are negligible between the two in a 1st Gen Tacoma? Laxtoy is reading my mind...

Many people see the specs side by side and always want the D-4D. The 1KZ's are fantastic engines though. They're super simple, IDI, rotary pump, have good power, and get excellent fuel economy. Contrary to popular belief, the 1KZ's can also be chipped. The main benefit of going with the D-4D is (besides more power) fully programmable, comes standard with a top mount intercooler, and 17% better fuel economy.

Thanks again for the education Todd. Yup, I'm one of those who did that side to side comparison and am also impressed by the numbers the D-4D offers. But I'm also interested in your point about super simple, what I call a desired characteristic - "stupid-simple," and most bang for my buck. No doubt the 1KZ is a great motor since it's still so widely used and maybe that would be a better option.

If you can project Todd, what could I expect to see in regard to performance in a truck like mine with a 1KZ and AT that weighs 4400 lbs and around 5400 lbs kitted out for a trip on the trail? I'm looking for more than what the 3RZ provides me now but also enhanced fuel economy (I'm getting between 16-19 mpg) which now varies with terrain and headwinds. And what about this chip business - to what level would that enhance performance and are there any risks to that?

I'm just asking for a SWAG (scientific wild-assed guess) Todd, so I'm not holding anyone to it; I appreciate your time to answer and educate. Just dreaming... looking for a comparison against my current power-plant for that day when it gets tired or I win the lottery. ;)

Typically, our 5VZ customers report that after their (1KZ) swap, the truck simply "feels" more torquey, cruises on the highway without downshifting on grades, and tows better. The stock 1KZ output numbers are comparatively similar to the v6 until you notice that the 1KZ makes most of it's torque well below 2500 rpm's. Since this is where 90% of drivers do most of their driving, much better fuel economy is the result as you're not racing the engine during typical driving. Compared to the 3RZ, Im sure the results will be even better. There are several dozen chip makers for the prolific 1KZ's overseas so my best advice to customers is to choose the one they like (and fits their budget). Typical power gains are in the 10-15% range but results may vary.

You're killing me Todd. K i l l i n g m e.

You know how awesome my truck would be with a 1KZ or 1KD, too. It would be flippin' perfect.

Must buy some lottery tickets this weekend...

I just built a Hilux on the Toyota Australia website. The drive away price of a Diesel Hilux double cab 4x4 Manual is upwards of 58,000 Australian, over 60 grand US. You could go buy a brand new Tacoma and have Dieseltoyz convert it and you would still be 10 grand ahead.

Well, I do have a stack of 1GR-FE's sitting around... ;)

..and it doesn't help that I've driven the Prado's that were brought in stateside for up-armoring does it? :D

FWIW I still haven't driven the 4Runner that was converted over to diesel that's up for sale in Santa Cruz. The 4 liter gasser does sound like an interesting proposition for a 2nd gen Runner but then I'd have to rip out my 5-speed conversion b/c there's no way I'd be going with the possibility of dealing with craptastic syncros like everyone's complaining about. I need to just save $ and buy a used pre 2007 Taco-DC instead and do what I really want. This build does look nice.

~FWIW like I've said before, mount a camera on a tripod on the passenger seat so it'll get both the dash as well as the street view, staring at a needle move's nice, but so is staring down the hood. ;)

@monkeyshowpictures, you're forgetting the issues of inspection, import, duties, left-hand drive, yadda-yadda-yadda. That up's the offset investment factor, but is nullified by the fact that most here suffer from M.I.B.S. (More Is Better Syndrome). How much will all the gear they add to the rig now that it's more powerful? :D
