2008 Tacoma D-4D swap *pics*

You buy anything from Toyota you are paying 40% over what you find the same thing for in the open market. I get 17mpg fully loaded in a stock Tacoma two people and a dog all my gear 5 extra gallons of gas 10 gallons of water and wood for a weekend.

If you could buy everything you need for 8500 and do it yourself, have it run excellent pass smog and be able to be registered I think that would be reasonable.

Price seems fair for diesel and tranny swap. It is gonna be roughly 20k to put a diesel and tranny in about anything unless you do the work yourself. My 05 Tacoma averaged 14mpg and never better than 16mpg which means I had to fill up every 240 miles. This is a sweet swap and could give a Tacome a 450+ mile range with a stock tank. A new 4.0 from Toyota is rediculously expensive. This swap makes a lot of sense on a well cared for truck with high miles.

Doing a $20K swap to get more range is ludicrous...either get jerry cans or put on a spare tank. At the most you might spend $1000....use the the other $19K for fuel...

It is not worth doing just for range. I think it is a cool swap and that the price for the swap is reasonable. I also think it would be a sweet swap for a T-100.

It's REALLY not for everybody I know. One of our customers last year with an FJ Cruiser claimed to have over $15k in upgrades to his rig "before" any swap. The strange thing was it really wasnt that crazy... Lift kit, tires, wheels, custom bumpers, snorkel, CAI, front and rear lockers etc. How practical is all of this stuff we do to our vehicle anyways right?

I concur and it could actually be nearly practical if you are putting a diesel in a truck that needs a new motor and tranny anyway.
For example Roseann's fj60 that needed a new motor. Instead of buying a new SUV they spent big bucks to put a diesel and new tranny in it along with re-doing the axles etc. What they ended up with is basically a new truck for the same price as a boring modern SUV, but now they have one with a lot more personality, that is capable and will run for a LONG time to come.

If my engine dies, watch out! It may be just the excuse to call Dieseltoyz up! :Wow1:

I've been lusting after your conversions for years now... sorry I missed this thread until now - beautiful work and a noble cause. I was out and about with my truck in Sparta, TN at GSMTR; and I didn't camp the whole time as I considered it "tethered overlanding".

It's not crazy at all... we seek to make what we have better - to perform at a higher level. That's always been my strategy for the projects I've inflicted on my truck. I've always envisioned substituting a D4D 3L TC engine for the similar sized 3RZ FE as a near perfect solution for economy and nearly double the original power of the gasser 2.7L.

Question: Is the D4D conversion compatible with the A340E automatic transmission?

In fact, dieseltoyz, I hearby volunteer the below vehicle to demonstrate OUR assertion. It would be the right thing to do for all the forum members. It would be the American thing to do. :clapsmile

Tangoblue, NICE RIG! That truck would make a great swap ;) Yes and no...the diesel trans that comes with the half cut is (while similar) a variant of the a340 trans.

The auto that is in my current shape 2007 Hilux D4D is an A340F (4 speed) for reference.

1 st gear is too tall for my liking...why they didn't stick the Prado 5 speed auto that comes on the prado D4D beats the hell out of me.

The A340F has a 2.8:1 first gear whilst the manuals in the hilux's equipped with the 5 speed R151F's have a first gear of 4.3:1

For comparison...the current Prado 150 D4D's have the 5 speed auto A750F with a first gear ratio of 3.52:1 and the manuals run a 6 speed RA61F with a first gear ratio of 4.17:1

Hope that helps for those interested.

A long range or aux tank solves this problem for about $1000. That is lot's of cash left over for fuel!

I agree with that, since most of us have put alot of time and effort not buildng what we want and how we want to perform. I would rather replace the engine with an upgrade, and I'm sure the D-4D will outlast most current gas motors in our rigs. I don't see a downside even with cost honestly.

while the price tag is steep, i agree with most if not all the pros that have been stated, as well as all the negs. it's as dieseltoys states, it's not for everybody. but, with that amazing low end power, great fuel economy and range, as well engine longevity, this might be the last off road truck you'd ever have to own, so you could literally spend the truck's lifetime, (and possibly yours :p ) refining it to perfection. i know the 3.4 l is an awesome engine, and i love mine for what it is, now that i'm at about 200,000 miles, i have to wonder how much farther i want to go, when is it time to let go of this one for a new start? with tangoblue's truck, the thing has entirely new suspension, you add a a d4d engine, you have an almost new, exceptionally capable truck that will go for 500,000 miles if maintained properly. that my friend, is bad axx, and if i had the coin, a consideration for sure
