A factory rear locker WITH ATRAC is a very build-able platform. The low clearance of stock 4Runners is a serious limitation, but is easily corrected with an inexpensive OME suspension. I strongly favor 16-inch tires/wheels, and LT255/85R16s will fit a lifted 4Runner very nicely using the stock 16-in. wheels.

I am surprised but delighted that Toyota is making the rear locker available in the 4Runner this late in body-style run after the FJC and Tacomas have been receiving all of the off-road attention in recent years.

I love my little V8 and how I have set-up my 4Runner, but if I was buying today I would certainly buy a V6 Trail Edition and save money, time and unnecessary surgery, and gain a 2WD position in the T-case.

There is some talk about the '09 4Runner SR5 w/ locker in this thread, but I thought the car deserved it's own thread.

There is a thread over on Toyota.120 dedicated to the new version of the 4Runner...

Looks like Toyota is trying to boost sales by offering the very compentent 4-Runner with some factory goods. Too bad they don't offer the 5.7L V8. I have this engine in my Tundra and all I can say that it is the best engine that I have ever had in a truck. It has power everywhere and with the combination of the 6 speed, it is scary that a 5800lb truck can get up to speed so quickly. At least Toyota put a great set of breaks to match the engine. I heard of a Rock Crawler Tundra edition, not sure though.

:smileeek: Wow!!! That is awesome! I like the FZJ-ish 5 spoke wheels. I also think they should've outfitted it with at least some 265/75/16 A/T's. Oh, well. Still a very nice rig. I'd pick one up today, if I could.

Anyone know what the MSRP is on the TE? Can't see an option for it on the "Build your Toyota" link.

There's hope yet for reviving the 4Runner heritage! I just hope it doesn't get redesigned into a FJRunner hybrid.

WHAT??? You crazy amng, that thing looks so cool. It looks ALOT better than either the FJC or the 4th Gen runner alone IMO. Glad to see some actual offerings in teh OR market from Toyota again. Personaly I think that they droped the ball with the FJC, and the 4 Runner has always been a very big "heritage" vehicle to N. Americans who have been deprived of all of the Cool Toyotas the rest of the world gets.

Cheers

the rear wing is toyota's attempt at redirecting airflow to clean the rear hatch. it works but wasn't effective so they made it larger :( it is cumbersome looking but removable. maybe you can request it without

I thought it was more for keeping the exhaust fumes out of the cabin when you had the rear hatch window down. I believe they called it the "air diffuser".

On the new one, it looks like there is an air channel on that "wing"?

I love it!

As many of you know, I view the 4Runner as one of the few modern wagons for overlanding. Toyota reliability, great build quality, visibility, good aftermarket support, factory locking differential, etc. Perfecto!

Is Toyota returning to its roots? I love it. All the off-road prowess of the FJC in a more usable and user friendly package. Bravo Toyota, I like the direction you're taking.
