2010 RR to be much lighter, diesel-powered

The Land Rover engineers are working overtime on the next version
of the Range Rover, which is due to be released in 2012. The news
is that the RR is going on a diet. The goal is a weight reduction of
900+ lbs. In a world populated with increasingly porky Land Cruisers
and Nissan Patrols, that's refreshing news indeed.

Customers for the RR in Europe and the rest of the world will choose
between a V6 or V8 turbo diesel engine. No word yet if the diesels will
find their way to USA.

That would be very promising. Lighter weight is always the way to go. We'll see if the diesel makes it our shores...

I hope they have a lot of skidplates. I can just imagine what the rocks would do to an aluminum monocoque.

Interesting the article mentions the new RR Sport will take the place of the current Discovery. So... Discovery will go away? I've also heard that the Defender will be moved to the current steel monocoque chassis for 2012 or 2014...? I wonder if that will be the new Discovery, or the Discovery name will just go away. I'd just be really surprised if they did away with the Discovery name because, it is pretty popular.

You never know. Audi, BMW, VW and Mercedes currently offer diesels in their SUVs and they sell very well (in Canada at least).

Yeah, exactly. I could afford a couple year old RR or RRS. That would be pretty tempting. Repairs scare the crap out of me though. If it wasn't for all the proprietary electronics, I might do it. I am thinking about an LR2 as a daily driver though. I dunno about their electronics though. I know they're a lot closer to a Volvo or a Ford, not a LR, so maybe not too bad. No airbag suspension anyway, and a Volvo motor.

I certainly don't discount that they might be popular, unforunately we've been hoping that Land Rover would bring something over since around the 300TDI, probably even earlier for some folks. They continue to dissapoint us silly americans. All we seem to get is more cupholders and leather options...
