I’ve loved Mercedes Sprinter Chassis for years! They are durable, reliable and economical. However, the cost kept me away. A decent used van and conversion easily can run $60k and a ton of work. This is where the Winnebago RV shines. While the new MSRP is $159k, used is much more cost effective. We purchased the Winnebago View 2.5 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve had experience of many highly modified 4x4 vehicles Tacoma, 4runner, Montero, Tundra… with “overland” setups including 2 styles roof tents, interior sleeping platforms and Four Wheel Camper. You always trade off comfort for capability. This modified version of the View offers sufficient capability to camp off grind nearly anywhere, reach any trail head and explore; all while enjoying non compromised comfort.

The Winnebago View chassis is different than most RVs. It’s build more “structural”. Full welded aluminum sidewalls and roof. The floor, walls and roof are integrally connected with interlocking joints. Fiberglass walls with block insulation. Crowned one piece fiberglass roof that wraps over the sides (leak prevention). The body doesn’t twist or distort when traveling on rough uneven roads. We’ve hung the front tire 2ft in the air and the chassis was rigid and stable.

A few questions:
1. Pictures with the slide open? Any issues with functioning in rain?
2. Max weight capacity of the motorcycle carrier is?
3. The space under the double bed at the back looks unfinished and open to a tank - more information on this please.
Thanks!

1. Will update later today with slide open pictures. No issues functioning in the rain open/closed. It is one of the better designed slides with cover awning.

2. Moto carrier is custom built (cost about $900) so no weight capacity. It bolts to factory hitch rated at 500lb load. It also has 2 side connections that bolt to extensions welded to the hitch/frame (no wobble). It's rather stout. It was designed around the motorcycle Kawasaki Z125 (Honda Grom should fit). Tray could possibly modified for longer/larger moto. I'll see about shooting a video of how it works.

3. The original bed location was at the cabinet height and hinged up to access storage area below. We raised the bed (added ladder) to allow additional storage height in the exterior "garage" compartment (space for 2 mountain bikes). It also allowed the exterior compartment to be enclosed. Bed platform height could be changed depending on desired uses. The exterior garage was the primary reason for choosing this RV. That was the primary feature we wanted while considering building a Sprinter cargo van (exterior under bed gear storage). The RV was an easy choice at it is built much better than van conversions and spacious (not confined feeling inside as vans are).

Is there any additional detail that would be helpful?

Love the bike garage. Being able to carry bikes is a prime consideration for me. Have you used it for cold winter camping? Is it comfortable and warm? Skiing use is another important consideration.

Thanks!

Hey Gary -

It is rather ideal for bikes. Advertising your expensive gear outside the vehicle is less good... And out of the weather!

We've been in sub freezing and snow on several occasions. It does alright... We have reflectix to cover all the windows which is helpful (good for heat too). The 25k btu furnace has no trouble heating things up. But not ideal for maintaining temperature... we removed the coach radio by the entry door with the intention of installing this: http://www.ventedcatheater.com/

The vented cat heater has nearly zero power draw, low fuel usage and without condensation or co2 issues (like all other cat style heaters). I think it would be ideal to quietly maintain temperature after the big furnace heats the space up. I'd definitely look into this opinion if snow camping was a planned activity.

Bonus. The Sprinter has an Espar diesel coolant heater. It will heat the motor very quickly in the coldest temperatures... the front cabin heater easily heats the entire space as well. Engine at idle burns less than 1 quart of fuel per hour at idle (.18/GPH).

Also, water tanks are inside (no issues there). Exterior tanks may need some antifreeze dumped in or insulation if using in extreme temperatures. Wasn't an issue for us.

Hope that helps!

Your running dura tracs up front..is this 4wd?

Rear drive. Duratrac tires all around.

We purchased it with the intent of converting to 4WD. Had time scheduled with WhiteFeather for the conversion $25-30k. After reading some of the "issues" the conversion caused we decided to use the RV first and modify if/as needed. We found there was nowhere realistic to drive the RV that it wouldn't go (won't be on trails or rock crawling). The traction control works very well to limit wheel slippage. The dually tires carry most of the load so it has excellent traction. The front tires will lift off the ground long before the rear gives up traction. The skinny tires (stock 31" size) connect well in the snow and slippery conditions - Duratracs are snowflake rated. Clearance was the biggest issue. This was addressed with the improved suspension which also improved the handling.

The dually tires have a 2.5" wheel spacer between them which helps improve stability. It also nearly eliminates the likelihood of rocks getting caught between the tires. Flotation is great in sand/washes with the tires aired down. The dually tires really help there too.
