Any opinions on the 2011 Nissan Xterra - 'Offroad' trim includes a locking rear differential.

How useful is the factory roof rack?

Thanks

It is an excellent platform and very capable. Check out www.thenewx.org and see what they are capable of. the factory roof rack is rated at 150lbs I think but people have replaced the cross bars with more sturdy options (search: dephep on the aforementioned forum) and have held 400+ lbs. Good luck in your searches, I think you will be happy if you choose to get into an X.

Cheers,
Mike

Rack loads

I have added Thule bars and have carried over 300 lbs of building materials without issue at all. You thinking roof top tent?

I would like to have the ability to mount a roof tent or carry light cargo, maybe a hi lift jack. Did you mount a tent on the Thule bars? or a basket?

My local options (UAE) are somewhat limited. I did find a local supplier for the Garvin racks that sit between the factory rails.

I would also like to install the factory gear basket. The local Nissan dealer just quoted that at about $700. I was expecting something closer to $100.

Wow, thats crazy that the gear basket is that expensive. I had no idea that they were that much. Even looking on discount parts websites they are still expensive. your best bet would be to look on www.thenewx.org in the classifieds section for someone that is getting rid of one. They should be able to ship over there for less than $700.

What is the premium for tthe off-road package? Consider the "X" or "S" models and install an ARB locker (you get the air compressor as a bonus!) and you can install a front locker later if you so choose...

The roof rack is extremely useful and functional. If you can lift it up, it'll fit up there ...

FYI there is no front locker available for the Xterra. If you swap in the Titan front diff then you can get a front locker but you will most likely need to swap the rear gearing as well and then you have to use pathfinder axles which are super expensive or complete the titan swap with titan upper and lower control arms and titan axles which increases track width by 3". Probably too much info but for the sake of completeness just keep it in the back of your mind if having a lockable front diff is something you desire.
