For 2011, the VW Touareg receives a significant makeover. The new design is about 450 lbs. lighter than the 2010 Touareg, while improving torsional rigidity slightly. The new Touareg is more aerodynamic as well.

Here's a drawing of the new Touareg, showing its revised sheetmetal and grill.

The Touareg will continue to be available with the 3.0L turbo diesel engine. The reduction in weight and more slippery shape results in a 31 mpg highway rating, up from 25 mpg in 2010. Unlike VW's 4 cylinder diesels, the V6 diesel uses diesel exhaust fluid to help control emissions.

VW also has developed a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the Touareg. All engines (V6 gas, diesel and hybrid) will be sold with an new 8 speed automatic transmission.

The Touareg's standard all-wheel drive is called 4Motion, which includes a Torsen limited-slip differential. The standard AWD can be switched to "Off-road driving" mode, changing the electronic monitoring systems for a loose surface, and activating Hill Descent Assist. Note that there is no low range setting in the standard AWD for 2011. (The 2009 Touareg had a standard locking center diff and low range. The locking rear diff was optional.)

The 2011 V6 TDI can be ordered with the optional "Terrain Tech" setup, which includes a stronger transfer case with low range, plus locking mode in the center and rear differentials. This locking ability is referred to as 4XMotion in VW literature. Selection of low range and locked diffs is made with a dial on the dash.

Potentially of use when offroad is the new Area View option, which displays the view of four cameras on a 6.5 inch touchscreen in the center of the dash.

hope they sorted out all their reliability issues. Not pretty when a 50-60K vehicle is on the side of the road regularly

Not for me!!

Couldn't wait to get rid of my '07. Worse vehicle I ever owned. Battery is under drivers seat, two hours to change oil @250 a pop. Constantly in the shop. Mine was a loaded V-8. Sweet when it ran...... Read the owners forums first!

So sorry you had to deal.

My wife and i were literally hot on an 09 tdi toureg until i started doing research(forums) and talking to actual owners of touregs. they are VERY problematic and it is not isolated to one area of the vehicle. TOO BAD- it is a beautiful idea and styling is spot on.

Just here...
You can keep it. As an owner of 3 VAG products, I have switched to Subaru and will never go back. The Touareg is a terrible truck. Lease it, never own it. Lease gets you full warranty coverage and you can ditch it before it gets expensive. If only tires and brakes were covered also.

It's a sedan, people. Trunk turned 90 degrees up. Don't be fooled.

They actually put a battery under the driver in that model?? What?!

AND look at the photo, carefully. I am SO SURPRISED no one called them on their ridiculous trunk space. It's what, 14 inches long, now?

If there are any VW engineers on this forum - PLEASE GET YOUR WATER PIPES TESTED FOR LEAD POISONING - YOU'RE FUNCTIONING LIKE ANCIENT CITIES THAT USED LEAD PIPES/SEALING MATERIAL!! You're slipping, but you don't realize it.

Have you noticed that? The trunk space getting shorter over the last several years? My '93 car has more trunk space than Touareg shown here.

Battery is under drivers seat

Reminds me of the old Bugs where the battery was under the rear seat. I was driving one once and a big guy was sitting in the back and he shorted out the battery on the metal springs of the seat and that started the stuffing on fire while we were at a stop light. We piled out of the car, tore the seat out and stood there laughing at ourselves while the people stuck behind us were honking their horns.

I very much wish BMW had optioned locking center and rear diffs and a 2 spd transfer case in the X5 35d. I detest ABS type traction control.

I told that to some Touareg enthusiasts on VWVortex one time, and the reaction was the same as when I said the LR3 was a car on this forum.

They are convinced the Touareg is a real truck with real offroad capability.

Toureg diesels

My friend is general manager of a VW dealership. He's had a 2010 Toureg diesel on his lot for a year now. VW forced it down his throat. He had to purchase a $6,000 lift to remove the engine on prior models from below in order to change out the turbo.:(

I've got one of those 'problematic, unreliable, underpowered, no off-road capability' 2004 Touaregs. It's been [WAY] off road, towed trailers up to the max rating, and really reliable for 80K. I'm able to do most of the maintenance on it, not unlike my old Land Cruiser.

Different strokes for different folks.
