2015/2016 New 3rd gen Tacoma Debut in Detriot

I have seen a few different navara's that way, and people always say how much better that boxed frame is. I guess either design is good, as long as its designed and used as its supposed to be.

Can't get any weight in front of the rear axle. Too much tongue weight, and who knows how the tray is loaded...but I have hunch. :D

I "think" this is a HiLux....too much rear overhang weight there buddy.

Two 04's and a '10.

Actually, I believe the doublecab has the problem less than the xcab... I bet the cab bears the brunt of the "band-aid" by absorbing force.

Buddy's cab (tundra) ripped due to frame flex... Wheeled hard, though.

Cut the rear of the frame off and link it...problem fixed! :D

C'mon... Kool-aid? No where near. I've owned 50+ Toyotas.... I've built a dozen. Stating that it's kool-aid drinking to be frustrated with Toyota's abandonment of boxed frames for Dana's design has no logic. Nor does ignoring every other mtg strategy (including Toyota) of using boxed and comparing to MDT for support.

But, I said I let.it go, so this will be my last post on the subject.

You're the only person I have ever seen that says hey have dents in the cab from the frame flexing. But then again I guess you didn't watch the video of the tacomas on the rubicon with there beds loaded down with almost no flex. Well good luck on your endeavors and you should sell your tacoma and go get the new Colorado as I'm sure it has a fully boxed frame that you have such a hard on for. Wait, why do you even still have your tacoma still if you dislike it so much? Hmm interesting.

They can (so can some port injection engines), but if I remember correctly, lean burn with gasoline is not currently legal in the US due to NOx increases.

Edit: On a previous car of mine, I was looking into HPTuners to implement lean burn and the Government made them (HPTuners) remove, from the software, the ability to enable that function.

Yeah, apparently the ability to run ultra-lean and meet emissions depends both on the type of catalytic converter used as well as the sulfur content of the fuel. In the past the US has had much more strict NOx emission standards and higher sulfur gas then the rest of the world so that would be a mark against running ultra-lean here in the US. I honestly haven't the foggiest idea where all that stands these days, but I know US sulfur content dropped dramatically in 2004 and will be dropping again in 2017. These changes were made specifically to allow for better environmental controls like more advanced catalytic beds. So it is quite possible ultra-lean direct-injection is now or soon to be viable. Rank speculation on my part.

You're taking things very personally. And the dents on the back of the cab has been a known problem since 05.5 when the taco was introduced. Search tacomaworld or ttora - plenty of examples on wheeled or loaded trucks. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

As for having a hard-on for the Colorado... Dude. Grow up a bit... No call for that type of attack on this forum. No need to get personal at all, frankly.

I just can't stand stupidity, it irritates the crap out of me. Give some examples because I've searched and saw one thread about it. If it was common it should come up more often.

Yeah, that is no beuno. You have (had?) a double cab short bed? If so...I wonder if they are over leveraged because of the cab/bed design, axle placement?

Seems to me the fulcrum is near the front of the bed back of the cab. Be like breaking a piece of wood, easier to break it right in the middle.

There are lots of pictures out there of broken vehicles due to overloading. That picture suggests a large boat on a trailer with and exceptionally short distance from the bow of the boat to the hitch. I've seen yard dollies in boat yards they look like trailers but are built with basically no trailer tongue and the axle placement isn't really of much concern given its just a wheeled cradle used to move the boat a few hundred feet if that from the parking spot to the hoist etc. Some of those trailers can have insane tongue weight numbers some times by design! Makes it hard to steal a boat on a trailer if it requires a forklift to lift the tongue and move it.

My point being unless you know exactly what was hitched to that truck and what the tongue weight was the picture only proves you can break a frame if you put enough weight on it.

Again with personal attacks. Seriously - take a pill, do some research and have some facts before you start spouting off what you believe to be true. Then at least pretend to act mature. There is no place or reason for your tone.

This thread has been very informative... Seriously. Lots of good information here and interesting perspectives.

It's funny how the thread went from "Tacoma pipe- dream wish list" (my previous post included), to "go back to 1st Gen", to "why the Tacoma will suck", to "why the new Tacoma does suck" (based on the spy pictures), to "why the Colorado/ Canyon is so much better", to "the new Tacoma is sweet!" (after the unveiling), to "why the Tacoma is better than the Canyon/ Colorado", back to "why the Tacoma, European laws, US laws, engineers, and everything sucks".

Since it's offered with a manual 6-speed, I know what my next truck will be- probably not till 2020 or so. The factory rear locker and manual transmission in a semi- compact (by today's standards) truck is what sold me. No one else offers that combo in the US. The Toyota Kool-Aid only tastes good with proper mixing; not too sweet and not watered down.

I've given examples to support what I've been saying. You have provided zero. Maybe you should do some research and have some facts before you start spouting off what you believe is true. :) if your offended by my "tone" as its on the Internet. Either ignore me or go somewhere else. I thought you were done posting on here anyways.

Scout I recall Nissan only offering the MT frontier with the nice stuff for like two years then it was basically canceled as an option beyond that. Personally I would not bet that they'll offer it much beyond the first year or two after the launch of the new rig. Sure you could probably get a stripped down 2wd rubber mats bench seat work truck in MT format but don't count on a nicely optioned Tacoma in MT format being offered much beyond a year or two. CAFE fuel standards probably are a big reason we see the MT being removed from options list especially if the Auto boxes are returning more predictable higher mileage numbers to the CAFE police. I like MT my self however I can also see my self being far less stressed on unknown challenging trails with the AT doing the fancy work.

I hope you're not right, but sadly, you probably are. On the 2nd gens, the overdrive ratio of the 6th speed is lower than the auto's 5th gear overdrive. 0.86 vs 0.79 I think. The auto guys get better mileage overall. With the new 6-speed auto, the mileage will probably be even better than the manual.

Without lower 4lo or axle gears, the manual is definitely more challenging on technical trails than the auto. I really like it for descending and everything else. Downshifting for emergency stops is 2nd nature and really helps with my overloaded truck. Works for everything but traffic. It's not my DD so that's not a problem.

I always buy used vehicles anyway and will hopefully find a standard tranny Taco in whatever year it's offered. Mine was 3 years old with 22k miles. The PO got tired of shifting... I never will.
