Don't have to use it if you don't want to, is my thoughts.

A plus would be recording everyday driving for accident sakes like they do in Russia.

Still seems an odd inclusion, but probably won't be the last vehicle to have it (I can see it now - NHTSA and Congress have a new mandate for a GoPro in every vehicle by 2019)

If your referring to the red truck in my avatar, I just found the picture on the net. I wish it was mine. But keep drinking. I have a FJC which I have been informed by the "real" cruiser experts that mine is just a toy. Happy Birthday, mine was a few day ago.

Well that sucks. I will own a 70 series pickup. It will happen. I ice fj cruisers. I pretty much like most toyotas. Happy birthday as well.

Dash cameras are starting to get popular around here. Didn't think much about it till I had a very strange encounter with a guy in a work truck pretty sure he was tripping on something. Had my whole damn family in the Sequoia headed to dinner. No joke corner of our street at the main cross walk to the school at the stop sign. He comes down the road I just sat there given people blow that stop sign all the time. Sure enough he blows it but stops in the middle of the intersection, waves me out. So I'm Like Ok no big deal dude I pull out and do 35mph down the residential street then we pull out on the larger two lane parkway where he comes up cuts me off slamming on his breaks waving his hands like a loony. I have 4 adults in the car and two kids! All of us are at that point thinking he's crazy and going to cause a wreck. Wife pulls out her cell phone he sees this and takes off.

A dash cam would have been easy to email the video footage to our local police who love stuff like this.. Small town and all. Two weeks later I see the same guy I was in a different car and follow him up the road which dead ends nothing but houses etc. Turns out the idiot is doing some work for a friend of ours on their house. I text my buddy the home owner saying hey you know that crazy work truck that tried to run us off the road? Dude!!! The guy is working on your HOUSE!!! He responds with perfect that guy is a F-up now I have a good reason to tell him to take a hike... Pretty sure between Nextdoor and the mom's network that guy just got black balled from three local towns. No work for you dumb ***!

Well.... I think that the tacoma looks better then I thought it would.
With that being said as a Reg cab fan boy, I will miss having that option. Who know perhaps they will change their mind when I go to replace my 2012 reg cab five speed.
Cheers,

Aren't back up cameras mandatory now? So a mandatory dash cam is not far fetched. "Land of the Free" they say....

I know I get letters from State Farm, that I'll get a 5% discount if I let them install a GPS tracker in my vehicles. 5% is a pretty cheap lure...though don't all late models have "black boxes" in them now?

Just having the location on the smart phone, it tracks me everywhere I go, kinda freaky and 1984ish. I am fricken boring, but still is disturbing to me when I see the tracks pulled up on google, I go in and delete the tracks once a month. Heck, being tracked as I typed this...you can find where I am typing from without too much effort.

LOL
Insurance tracking car use patterns I'm not into that they have far far too much cash flow and monopoly on that business than should be allowed. Having said that Grandpa called me not long after moving out there to CA and getting his first smart phone. The big smart phone deal for him was mapping given he wasn't all that familiar with the area and once he got familiar with the phone it gave him a sense of freedom. So he calls one day mid day flustered. Says to me where the heck is XXXX I've been driving around in circles trying to find this damn gun shop etc. My response was I have no idea. His response was look up the damn shop and then go to that damn tracking site for my phone and tell me how to get to the store!!! HA HA HA!!
I had to ask him for his tracking password given he was sooooo not liking the idea of a phone tracking app!

That was two years ago. I've had a few other calls like that since he insists I make sure I have his tracking app password now so I can track him down when needed. LOL

1984 is right... and it's going to get worse. There will come a day when no one will be allowed to drive with 56 cameras and a remote operator to walk them through a 4-way stop. I will be moving out of country if that ever becomes reality.

Black Box - sort of. Gov't mandated GPS after 9/11... and I anticipate they will get more... intrusive... soon. The whole idea of "Connected Car" scares the crap out of me.

I can see it being used against us easy-peezy. I drive like an old man anymore...but no one's perfect...I can see them giving you quarterly reports...oh I see Mr. XXXXX, we have you exceeding the speed limit 3.4% of the time you drive, and rolled a couple few stop signs late in August, and couple in September...we now have to increase your premium.

Big Brother fa sha!

That's funny.

I'll use the tracking app for when I go out on the moto so the wife knows that I am safe, it doesn't work too well out in the boonies though, still need to break down and buy a Spot.

I remember being freaked out when I pulled up the daily tasks on my iPhone, and seeing the first thing that popped up: "Your commute to work today in XXX will take 20 minutes."

Ok, stalker Siri, quit following me around. Almost made me want to go Jeremiah Johnson and move to Montana.

To get the thread back on track, here is QA session with Toyota Chief Engineer Mike Sweers that covers the changes to the new Tacoma and addresses some of the questions/concerns that some have expressed on the tread.

Here's another video QA with the same engineer. There's some overlap with the written one above, but some unique stuff too. http://new.livestream.com/Toyota/TacomaChat
