Nah, its a term for people who think they rough it, compared to people who want to take other stuff with them.

As soon as your tires spin, you make ice. Plus, jacking your RPMs up like that is horrible on the machinery. Take it slow, take it easy, make your tracks so you can back out when you lose forward momentum.

Its called momentum. I guess in Virginia theres not a lot of deep snow.

When we retire our Mazda 3 it will be replaced with a Subaru XV Crosstrek, my wife has been hinting at it strongly so maybe for Christmas next year.

You obviously do not travel much or you are simply naive, there are THOUSANDS of miles of off road trails open to anyone who wants to venture beyond their backyard, you just happen to choose to live in a boring place without much access to such places. And FYI, many of us "Jeep" owners started off as backpackers and still do it, I am willing to bet I could buy your Subaru for what I have invested in outdoor gear alone. To address the grill and fridge comment, can you honestly explain why it's bad or wrong to camp in comfort when the nearest grocery store is many miles away, or is that just your ignorant and unfounded opinion? And if you think a Jeep is a status symbol, it would be amusing to know what you think of my 4 other purpose built vehicles and our nice house on the hill. Huge difference between a status symbol and simply living comfortably, but it would appear that you are one of those who think anyone who has more than you must be a rich prick. Care to prove me wrong?

Huge difference between day hikes and week long trips into the desert, educate yourself and you will see where you are wrong.

Hypocrite much? At first you express your disdain for Jeeps and then you say you would love to own one someday.

Huh, proofreading is your friend.

That Jeep driver was clueless.

Did you even watch the damn video?

Do you have much real experience with anything related to the physics of driving?

If you are going to fill this thread with babbling drivel, do us a favor and use the multi-quote function. kplzthnx

I hike to where I camp, where no vehicles go legally. The roo drops me off at a trailhead, and I walk in the rest of the way, where you HAUL your glampground with you. I would say that the only thing missing, is a TV, but most of you take tablets, with downloaded movies. The horrible payload comes from your available space, which is minimal in a jeep. Now, a jeep would be nice, if they were better at handling themselves on concrete, where the majority of vehicles live. Instead, whew, they suck.[/QUOTe

I enjoy my glampground stuff, load up the XJ I wasted 40K on cool crap that I don't need, including firing up the BBQ, and take out my prime rib eye's out of the ARB fridge and a great bottle of wine, all at 10k ft! Awesome. I also backpack with my wife, we bring great wine, maybe a awesome cigar for after we eat a mac n cheese mountain house dinner, maybe even a little music from my i-phone to watch the sunset on a granite boulder sitting in my 1lb $150.00 waste of money chair at 11,000 ft, so what, do what makes you smile, don't be a hater

Gets even better when that steak is elk loin medium rare.

If we weren't such a litigious society here in the states I might consider marketing a kit. :(

Yep, the Foz mod is pretty much the same. I could wire up a knob, but it's automatic decision making skills have been good enough so far that I only really want to override for the 50/50. The "reasearch" thread on this mod was intriguing... they played with different voltages until it was dialed in just right.

It seems weird coming from Jeeps and Land Rovers where the 50/50 split is caused by a physical lockup via lever, to find what's basically a dimmer switch in the Subi's that's technically capable of anything from a 90/10 to 10/90 split. :D

The subi is capable to do so thanks to the center differential. Its basically a limited slip transferring power front/rear. HOWEVER, in order to operate a limited slip has to have one wheel spin faster, which means you have to loose traction because it starts working. With a locker you never loose traction, the wheels spin at the same rate all the time. This is better when you go slower or go up a steep hill. On my Grand Vitara I have both options and believe me it feels so much easier on the differential to lock it, and so much easier on the transmission when it is put on low gear.

While we're fine with friendly jests being lobbed back and forth, there is no excuse for flooding or personal attacks and they will not be tolerated on this forum. This is the last time that this thread will be cleaned up, next time it gets locked and the offending parties banned.

My parents live in the back country in Canada. They have a Tundra with an ARB, mild lift, and some BFG AT KOs plus an Outback. They use the Tundra for hauling heavy loads (which is pretty frequently) but prefer driving the Outback especially in the winter. The lighter weight really makes it easier to handle on unplowed dirt roads as long as there isn't a ton of snow. You can't just pummel a torn up "road" into submission like you can with the truck but the Outback can get a ton of places with careful driving. They even hit a deer in the Outback on the highway and managed to drive another 100 miles to the next town to get it fixed.

So in short I think we can all agree on that a Subaru is a solid vehicle for mild use, but when the going gets tough then you're better off with a more capable machine. That or plan on doing some VERY serious modifications to your Subaru to make it comparable to a stock, but more capable machine you can get right off the lot.

On that note, I love Subaru's. I haven't had the best of luck with them but here in PA/NJ, they are nearly unbeatable when it comes to the white stuff. With that being said, I'd much rather roll around in a new JK or an 80/100 Series.

To call the Outback the ‘anti-Wrangler' is a bit aggressive. I mean when you put them side by side, what's comparable?
