2017 TACOMA $$$$$$$

I'm with the 2020 guy, but make it 2025. Lots of new loaded Pros around here driven by middle aged work aholics. There will pleny of used ones with nothing but pavement miles on them in a few yrs. If I wanted to drop 45k on my dream truck? Diesel canyon with cooled seats and Icon suspension 2inch lift. Nothing crazy just enough to show its not a off the self daddy suburbia wagon

I hope that Husky is still doing well in the US. I owned an 06 TE450 and it was an incredible bike. The short stroke motor and wide ratio tranny was a hoot. The XR suits my current needs best, but I suspect I'll own another Husky someday.

They are doing quite well: http://www.husqvarna-motorcycles.com/us/news/successful-2015/

Too bad they don't offer the diesel in the work truck model. That and no extra cab...or manny trans. You can get a Ram EcoDiesel for $30K...of course it is a Ram ;), have to spend over $40K to get the Chevy.

At that price difference I'd absolutely go with the the TRD OR. A lot of the little niceties like push-button start, fog lights, intermittent wipers, etc. are missing from the lower-trim (non-TRD) Tacomas, and do add up in parts/effort/labour if you were to add them after the fact.

$2500 buys quite a bit. Intermittent wiper stock is $100, it is quite literally plug and play, can't imagine the stock fog lights are all that good, $330 from Rigid gets you some super bright LEDS....can definitely live without push button start. Right there is a touch over $2000 to spend on other things...like suspension or tires.

I think the stock TRD package still makes sense for some. Granted I myself have had 2 TRD packaged Tacomas and only used the rear locker a handful of times (99% of those times may not even have been necessary :)), so looking back, it probably wasn't worth it for ME. So there are people like me that hardly take it on tougher trails that it won't pay out to get the TRD package. And those hardcore guys....won't pay out for them either, since they swap just about everything on the truck anyways.
_
But there is a large segment that will take it on moderate trails that would benefit from the stock upgrades. ATRAC, locker, etc. would be beneficial for those guys, and something that would cost more if they went aftermarket (not to mention ATRAC is not even possible to retrofit).
_
All that said, it's ridiculous a mid-size truck with sub-par MPG is netting such high prices. I personally wouldn't get one, in any trim, because of the aforementioned reasons. For guys like me, full-size makes much more sense, especially if you're talking same cost, same or better MPG, better towing, bigger cargo, more comfort, etc. Like someone said already, I'll just buy a side x side that will be so much more capable right out of the box.

From Rigid you say?..

Funny (ironic) you say that as I'm pretty sure the 2017 TRD Pro's foglights are some Rigid SR-Ms that list for about $100/ea - http://offroadnewswire.com/aftermar...ota-tacoma-is-equipped-with-rigid-industries/

He was referring to the difference between the SR5 and the TRD OR, not the Pro. If you can find them $100...even better! (I just did quicky search for some retro fit LEDs)....am I sure you can buy some Chinese knockoffs that are even better than the fogs that come stock on the OR. ;) Heck, you have to spend a lot of money to get the low rent Rigid LEDS on the Pro! Good ol' Toyota going the cheap route, and charging a premium!

imo the trd pro is a no brainer. You cant get anything but a cloth interior with the TRD off road, and if you want the tow package, premium, with JBL audio on the off road, that is a $4,400 package that requires the orange color(at least, per the toyota website).

For an extra 4k for the Pro, you get internal bypass shocks with springs that are ready to accommodate 33" tires off the lot, an easy clean up synthetic interior seating package, some graphical updates, skid plate, wheels, etc. If you were to update the TRD off road, the suspension components on the aftermarket would set you back probably 2k for comparable lift springs and bypass shocks, and I dont even want to know how much the leather or synthetic seats from toyota or an upholsterer are.

The other alternative is to get the limited, which costs you crawl control and the locker; so that's out.

I dunno. I can see if you were looking at a stripper tacoma to build that the pro is a comparative rip off....but We decided a while back that we like sound/nav upgrades on our trips, and that we would stick with leather or synthetic seating surfaces as we travel with kids because they spill absolutely everything and grind it into the seats, and no amount of shampooing gets it out...to say nothing of the dirt we all pack into the thing on the road for a month at a time etc.....so from my point of view, when considering that in addition to the other features, I can't re-create a TRD pro for less by getting the TRD off road and going to the aftermarket...especially when the suspension that comes on it is adequate for my use.

Just my $.02 as a guy who does the trips with a wife and kids that either like some comfort items or make an absolute mess.

It is totally ridiculous....but people like a lot of fluff in their trucks now. Get more bang for you buck with a fullsize...I am even finding Ram EcoDiesels for around $26K....kinda wild that one they cant keep on the lot, and the other they can't give away. Dunno...have a couple long time buds that were diesel fan boys, that are going back to gas. Gas is just so much cheaper to own, and a hell of a lot less fussy. Don't need a lot of power you can find a RAM V6 extra cab sub $23K! https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/669741665/overview/ Don't have kids...RC V8 4WD sub $24K! https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/658920908/overview/

Never could understand luxury interior in a vehicle that is going to beat on. Even the base model SR has a little too much fluff for me....but as they say to each their own.

I wouldn't even consider crawl control, since you loose the manual trans...why even get off the couch if you can't have a manual trans?

The available manual trans is really only thing that keeps me somewhat interested in the Tacoma. Toyota really narrowed down the choices for even that. Want an ACLB V6 4WD and a manual!? The pickins are slim. Dunno...Toyota kinda lost me, when their mini trucks became not so mini. I was approved for a brand new truck buy the better 3/4's...can't seem to crack open the bank account to buy one.

Man, just get over your manual tranny-fetish and buck up and buy something already.

:D

The way things are going, you're more likely to see a CVT hybrid truck before they release another manual trans equipped rig. I'd think Tacoma will do away with the manual soon as well. Dodge is sticking with manuals but only diesels and like you said, more pain than benefit there. But seriously, do your better 3/4 a favor and put her in a nice comfortable full size. You can row your gears on your other boy toys.

Not going to happen, the Trooper is an auto...and I hate driving it. Think we put a whole 928 miles on it last year.

CVT!!?? ewwww!

Actually... she prefers manuals too. Think we will just keep on collecting 1st Gen Tacomas. ;)

Even though I was approved for a new truck, she thinks I deserve it....I have given it a lot of thought... (ooooh...new truck!)....more I think about it since my Tacoma is already built how I want it with a Wildernest camper, suspension is done, ARB bumper, locker, etc...To replace what I already have with something brandy new, it would cost me over for $40K for a new ACLB with an AT Habitat...(V6 ACLB manny is only available in the Sport...highly doubt i can get it OTD for any less than $34K)....and that is not even doing the suspension, tires, locker, winch & bumper. Just seems silly to spend around $50K...to not have any real gains.

I've gone back and forth about the manual v automatic too. What it comes down to for me is, My wife will be more willing to put in driving miles during long road trips if its an auto, 89 4runner is manual and she hates driving it. We did a 1400 mile road trip in my Ridgeline last fall and it was nice having her give me a relief from driving every once in a while.

As far as $$$$ of the new Tacomas, I've come to rationalize it because when I'm done my 5 year loan the truck will probably be worth 20k. When I went to the dealership a couple weeks ago, they had a few Tacos with 100k miles and they were still fetching 20-22k.

Think I lucked out, she grew up on a farm...kinda has the same sediment as me, why have a truck if it doesn't have a manual trans. Years and years ago when we first started dating...she drove a 26' Bobtail from Missoula to Tucson by herself...and she is a tiny little thing...saw that, said to myself..."ok...think I like this girl!"

I used to blow through money like it was going out of style...now that I have aged...have become a cheap ol' bastage...believe that comes from being self employed for so long...I run a very tight ship. While the resale on Tacomas is great, more concerned about the bottom line than resale since I run them into the ground...fix them, then run them into the ground. $40K+ for that Pro...buys an awful lot of fixes for what I already have. If it isn't rusted out or wrecked...keep on fixing.

The price for the TRD PRO is roughly about 4K higher than a TRD Off Road. That seems high but when you look at resale for the Tacomas, they really hold their value.

For Example a 3 year old Tacoma, with 36k Miles sells for 35k.

I was waiting for a 2017 TRD Pro but as I began really thinking about it and researching the prices for Off-Road 2016s.. I realized the premium I was going to have to pay for the TRD PRO. Then I also tried to see if the TRD PRO had a sunroof, I don't think it does.. Realizing I was really going to want a 2-3" lift over the 1" Fox lift, I decided to start watching for deals on the 16's.

Last month, I was finally able to get a TRD OR DBCSB with premium/Tech w/JBL for $36,500.00, roughly 3K off MSRP.

The TRD PROs are actually now on the Toyota website and the price is 43,700.00..

Difference of 7k.

I can use the 7k difference to build my '16 exactly how I want.

Dakar Leafs
TRD 17" rims
Toyo 285/75/17 33.9"

Lucky guy. If my wife and kids were more tolerable of smaller rigs, I would still be driving my 1st Gen double cab Tacoma. But you know, happy life and wife and all that... :D

Yep, super lucky! She rides dirt bikes too. :D

Oh yeah, if momma ain't happy... ;)

There are only two of us, so the Tacomas work well for us....she really doesn't like the fullsizes...too big, she even thinks the 2nd/3rd gen Tacos are too big. She liked my 1st gen Tacoma so much she wanted one for herself.
