2020 Defender 110 Eiger Grey overland build

No shortage of rovers at my house.. 2001 P38 Range Rover (175k miles) that started it all, 2006 LR3 (190k), 2010 L322 supercharged (120k), 1991 Santana/defender (300tdi conversion) and 1990 D90...but I am getting tired of upkeep on the older trucks. Going to thin the herd now that I bought a 2020 Defender 110. Originally was going to wait for a diesel model, but we may never see one over here. So I started my search...

I wanted a base model, steelies and offroad packages. Luckily found one with everything I wanted and nothing I didn't need. P300, steelies, heated front seats, both offroad packs and tow pack and thankfully no sunroof! Talked to my friends at Rocklin Rover and they shipped it up from the bay.

18 miles on the odometer. Lots of plans for her in the future and she will not be a garage queen. (Cute bow, lol..)

So, I love the white steelies, but since my truck didn't come with a white roof, I thought they looked a bit out of place. I decided to paint them black and am very happy with the results.

Lots of plans, but need to start with rack first. The OE expedition rack is nice, but limited with attachments and I don't like the rear split. I will be mounting a large roof top tent which will take up most if not all of the rack. I decided on the full length Front Runner rack.

I will do a separate writeup of the install as it is not straight forward and the rails need to be removed.

Did you have a total pain in the ass with the front bolts of the OEM rails? Mine spun the threadserts in the roof and now I am trying to figure out how to get them out so I can bolt the Front Runner feet on.

I have half of the upper interior all undone looking for the threadserts on the inside.

What kind of paint did you use? In my experience, all paint will eventually chip, and then it will peel. Did you look at powdercoating? A friend of mine bought a cheap, old electric oven for a hundred bucks and powder coated his own wheels for his race car.

I will say the back steelies with a black roof does look good....

If paint is used it is easy to do touchup even if they get scratched, and they will. They look great.

Powder coat will do the same thing on steel if it gets chipped and is allowed to rust at all.

True, non-stainless steel will flake if it starts to rust, and then it will take whatever is on top of it.

I had them powdercoated but in a gloss. I won't powdercoat sliders as their purpose is to get scraped up. Wheels will get dinged up but hopefully not as bad. I should be able tontouch them up so they don't rust. At only $125 each wheels, it wasn't bad.

Took her on Mojave Road for her first trail. 3 days of cool track, nothing took challenging but I did blow a sidewall as the sub was going down.

Had another 2020 Defender Godwana Stone 110 on the trail as well. He has the OEM expedition rack and I have the Front Runner. The OEM is harder to attach things to.
