Pros and cons of a 2020+ Frontier?

How's the legit overall mpg?

Standard with a 3.8L V6 engine

310 horsepower
281 lb-ft of torque
9-speed automatic transmission

Was the 2020 model the first year of the 3.8L?

Checked Consumer Reports, and they give it good scores for reliability. Their MPG average was 18... so wouldn't expect much there. Fuelly is a good site for comparisons.

EDIT: I was curious so looked it up on Fuelly. Avg MPG is ~18.5 vs ~19.5 for a Ranger.

Mine has been a great truck, no issues, plenty of power in the mountains and decent gas mileage. Interior is probably a little dated compared to others and did not come with car play. I find the king cab to be roomy and the seats comfortable. The console design is lacking and not the best. Mine is an SV and is low tech which I prefer. The ride is comfortable, and the handling is fine. I looked at Tacomas and they were more money with a 100000 more miles.

coming of age in the 80's, 310hp from an affordable V6 in a compact truck is hilarious to me - way more than ferraris and corvettes of the time

heck, I think my 4.7 V8 Tundra has 240?

I think I remember the first pre-Tacoma Toyota truck with a V6 had 150, and they thought it might be too much power for a small truck

I have a 2022, new body style with 3.8L and 9 speed continued from 2020. I've found it to be a nice truck for not too much $. Strong and smooth engine, always over 20 mpg except when towing. Useful Tow Mode. Downsides are low payload, small gas tank and mirrors. I needed to get a camera to see behind my small travel trailer.

I'm looking at the mid sized truck market......to buy a used truck this month

The Frontier seems good, but the back seat legroom is a concern......

The Canyon/Colorado back seat legroom seems alittle larger

Back seat room is considerably less than my previous F150. I don't think an adult would be comfortable for any length of time. I'd be surprised if any competitor would have much more, there's only so much space in small trucks.

I had a 2012 Frontier and currently have a 2023 Frontier. I think they're great. The 3.8 v6 and 9 speed transmission are reliable and the truck doesn't feel slow. Gas mileage isn't amazing but its a truck. 🤷‍♂️ Interior isn't luxurious but again, truck. I'm with @mountainsports2002 I bought an "S" trim crew cab because it didn't come with all the extra's.

The back seat isn't large but it really isn't bad. My wife (5'8") and I (5'10) have swapped sitting in the back on road trips to entertain a toddler. A lumbar pillow makes all the difference in the world and cost all of $10.

The D40 is a tried and true chassis that ran for 17 years. The new D41 is a variation of it with some improvements. The new Powertrain(VQ38DD with the 9 speed auto) is nice when you think about it and will help make MPG better than the previous Powertrain(VQ40DE with 5 speed auto). This is thanks to the extra power with enhanced Variable Valve Timing and the close gear box of the 9 speed allowing you to stay in the power and without jumping too much on the RPM's.

I myself have a 2012 with the early Powertrain and I can say that I wish I had the new Powertrain, but at the same time I like the simplicity of the old Powertrain. That said I think you will be happy with the D40 regardless. It's a capable vehicle is very reliable as long as you stick to the Severe Service Schedule

Old '08 D40 owner here, wandering past 200k miles and still really happy with the truck, though the newer 3.8l and 9-speed make me a little jealous-- Part of the charm of the Frontier is it is simple, durable and ages well.

Really solid, old-school 4x4 system (though it engages on the fly up to 60mph), all the guts tuck up above the fully boxed frame, good sight-lines, power, and (as I'm so fond of saying) the payload is the same in lbs as kg (?!?). The breaks could be better and so could the turn radius.

The reliability of my particular truck has been stellar, which is good as the dealers near me have been lousy and I appreciate never having to take it there. A basic OBD scanner has let me replace the sensors that have aged-out and triggered the CEL, now I'm changing-out door seals and other rubber parts.

They are really capable off-road right out of the box with no mods, but tires and suspension upgrades will always make a difference. It isn't as well supported by the aftermarket as Tacomas, but there is so much less that needs fixing/modding, so that's understandable.
After more than a decade I noticed that my manual calls for 87 octane, and avoiding 85-86 actually gave me a slight improvement in mileage... but running the cheaper stuff did no harm. They like regular fluid changes and long drives on the beach (or ancient seabeds), and country road speed limits--it's still shaped like a brick and wind resistance is a real thing.

The D41 seems quieter, a little more powerful, slightly worse visibility and better mileage and lots of driver-assistance I couldn't care less for. Make sure you get the color you'll be happy to see for the next decade or so--
