Speaking as a Fleet Coordinator for a large municipality... contact the fleet that the unit belonged to (if possible). If it was a municipal owned unit, the records are public knowledge.

What's a decent 2-4" lift for these? Or should I just go big tires? I wouldn't rock crawl. All I see are what I perceive to be bro-dozer type lifts using cheapo components. Are there solid Fox, King, Icon etc setups?

I daily a 1500 extended cab, I recently just ordered a set of brand new stock leafs off of a 14-18 1500 for cheap off of eBay and a pair of Deaver mini leafs to get the butt back up to stock and eliminate the factory block. Going to crank up the front a little to level it out, and add upper control arms if needed, and eventually some nicer shocks since I have Bilstein 4600s with a good amount of life left already on the truck. Running 285/70-17s, I wouldn't go bigger on my 3.42 gears. If I keep the truck long enough I'll swap the rear out to a 12 bolt and get 4.10s or 4.56s go to 35s.

With a 2500, you can fit 285/75-17s stock easily, and you'll have the extra gear to turn them without worry. There is go fast long travel stuff available, and you can swap the torsion bars on the 4x4 out for a coil over too, if you want. Not really necessary though, for most people. If you want more than just a 2-3" boost, RCX and BDS make nice lift kits, but everything is going to be an IFS box drop, which just lowers all your clearance you gained with the lift.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong. Is there anyone out there seriously considering putting utility bed and a camper on a half ton? That would be insanity. We have a 1 ton with an FWC in a utility bed. Except for the gas mileage the thing is flawless. A minimum for utility bed in a camper installation would be at 3/4 ton, and while you're at it, if you have the option, just go to a 1 ton. How on Earth could you camp for any length of time in a half ton with a camper and not be overloaded? If you're making day runs? 1/2 ton will be great. Why bother with a camper & utility bed at that point? That doesn't make any sense. Driving down the freeway at 70 miles an hour in an overloaded vehicle? Not for me, no way, not anymore. Not at my age.

As I said, I'm getting horrible gas mileage. I have the 460 gas motor. Go with the diesel if you can, the mileage is going to be way better.

I had an '86 carb'd 460. It could sure drain the wallet for fuel costs.

When I did the math on diesels- the Alison and D max was a 10k$ Option combo, diesel was more expensive for fuel, service. And the heavy engine wears out the front ends a lot faster. Especially when used. Coming from someone who has spent a lot of his life farming and ranching, and has his CDL, along with extensive experience with the diesel rigs we use in the fire service....

to each their own.
