2nd Gen Tacoma lift issues?

Im searching for my next vehicle..

Tacoma
FJ
Xterra
04 Disco

I keep hearing something about issues with lifting a tacoma, they get alignment problems and such. If im going to spend alot I want SUPERIOR reliability, otherwise Id just get another discovery.

Really? What did you hear? Did you find any threads describing that problem when you searched the forums?

I haven't read of any issues with alignment after suspension changes to Tacoma's. There are a lot of folks that sport Tacoma's here too...

No problems...

I had the OME 886 coils and Dakar w/o AAL installed on a 2005 Tacoma in Sept '10 by sierra expeditions...no problems with install/alignment/or use during the last year...took a few months to settle but nice now...

I just installed the OME with 885's on the front. The "problems" I encountered have to do with correcting the geometry associated with driveline angles and replacing the UCA's so my caster could be adjusted to my satisfaction, it was just too twitchy with stock UCA's. I consider this as part of getting the truck dialed in, but that's what I expected.

It seems like each truck is a little different as far as what's needed post lift...some people run the stock UCA's without any problems, have no driveline vibration, etc

Been running Donahoe (Icon) 2.5 CO's and Dakars at 3 inches

I have a 2009 Taco with the same setup and have had no issues what so ever with the lift. I do however know people that bought cheaper components and cut corners on the install that have had some problems.

What you've heard about the Tacoma's lift=vibration issue was a hot topic in the Toyota forums for the 2006-2008 Tacomas and was discussed in another thread here on Expo. I don't know if it was a problem in the later year models. Basically, many, but not all, people who lifted their Tacomas even moderately (~2.5") experienced a vibration at low-speed transmission shift points. In my case, immediately after I installed Bilstein 5100s all around plus Deaver springs in the rear I experienced a vibration shifting at low speeds. It wasn't a big deal, but it was very annoying and gave the impression that something was not wearing right. The 2006-2008 Tacoma's drive line is apparently very sensitive to misalignment. It turns out that the science of drive-line dynamics is quite complicated and solutions such as installing a two-piece drive shaft, adjusting the carrier bearing, etc were flying around like bats at sunset. After a lot of research, I chose to install a 3 degree shim under my rear spring packs and that cleared the problem completely. After driving another 60K+ miles on this setup I've had no further problems and all drive-line wear is within tolerances. There are other types of vibrations described on Toyota truck fan-sites, so you might want to do a little reading to see where your model year or particular lift configuration fits in.

I just in stalled the Dakar leaf pack with 885's in the rear and ICON's in front with 2.5 cranked in and a Total Choas UCA, when I went in to get it aliened the tire guy couldn't believe the set up and the alienment was only off in the toe - total for both sides by 1".
So for my 2010 Tacoma (Thumper) all was good, ps: A friend and myself put it in and photos and build thread to come.
