If you are going to Port Angeles, you might consider going a little farther to Port Townsend. It is a cool victorian town. I lived there a year while I attended the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding. This is the town the movie, An Officer and a Gentleman was filmed in. The base in that show is Fort Warden State Park. There are also more of those big concrete bunkers near by. Ft. Flagler I think. You can check out the boat school if you're interested. They're pretty laid back and I'm sure you could check out what they're building. You can get a ferry across to Whidbey Island from PT. Then head north and check out Deception Pass on your way to Anacortes. Then catch ferry to San Juans. After you're done in the San Juans you ought to head up toward Mt. Baker before you head east. Wish I was there. Damn I'm jealous

Head over to the coast and head north. There aren't many towns but plenty of camping. The Hoh rainforest is as cool as it gets. 5' diameter trees that fell over and 2' diameter trees growing on top of them. I don't think there's anywhere like it. Keep your eye out for giant banana slugs. I know there is a loop hiking trail through there I can't remember how long. Maybe 30 miles? Also a shorter loop as well. You could definitely spend a day or two anyhow.

"Life’s journey is not to arrive safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, “Holly ****…what a ride!”

Enjoy......

That's the dream anyway ...... for some funny things happen at just the wrong.....time! Everything was going just right then surprise. 13 surgerys later w 2 more yet to go....may still get the chance to slide in to base. But never think that you've got it going just right! There is an outside force that can kick your butt w/o warning. I walked out my back gate to get into my beloved XJ to go on a great steelhead fishing trip just like many a time.....25 min later I'm in an Ambo w a 50/50 chance of living ......its a great saying tho.....what a ride.
I'm not done, but its be a bit of a speed bump:D

How about going to Rainier first. Then up to Seattle to do the city tourist thing. Catch a ferry across the sound. Head out to the peninsula and Olympic park. Catch a ferry to victoria/san juans. Get to B ham by Thanksgiving. Head east over north cascade highway. Hwy 20. Beautiful country up there but they close it for the winter. Check the dates if you consider that way.
Thanks for posting so much! Im a little jealous of your travels!

I've decided to take the course I have planned, I'm taking all of the places recommended to me into consideration. OdessaAbe recommended the HOH campground to me so that is where I'm headed now. I'm currently in Forks, WA fueling up, bought a map and discovery pass and will head to the woods. It is beautiful here now, the frost has started so winter will most likely be around the corner, I'm actually looking forward to seeing a little snow. I will try to get my posts up to date when I can.

:truck: Time to mob it out!

Portlandia Part II

After the day in Hood River we headed back to Portland, we got back a little late and ended up not popping up and just parked on the street around the corner from my buddies house. The next day was Halloween and we had talked a little about getting tattoos. A lot of people can BS, but not SL, if she says she will do something than that is most likely what's going to happen. The first night we were in Portland we were walking down Alberta street and there was a small art gallery, we stopped in for a look. The artist had made very intricate portrait paper cut outs, the details were amazing. We later found out that she was a tattoo artist, we decided to get some work done with her at this point. SL got a dandy lion that reminded her of her childhood and I got a compass to remind me of my journey and to hopefully guide me in the right direction, the pointer is pointed North.

After tattoos we stopped at the Green Dragon for a beer then headed downtown to the Mcmenamins Crystal Ballroom. We just used whatever clothes we had for a costume, SL was "where's Waldo" and I was a backwoodsman. The party at the ballroom was awesome, picture a room full of 60-70 thiry-something-year-olds dancing to 90's pop and rock, it was a blast.

I only had one drink and was able to get us back to the house without any worry. Portland knows how to party!

Long Beach Washington

Thursday we decided to get out of Portland on another side trip. We left in the afternoon and shot up the 5 out of Portland into Washington. The tentative plan was to get over to the coast at some point and do a loop through Astoria and then back to Portland. We caught the 4 off of the 432 out of Longview and headed west towards the coast. It was a nice ride, some of the route borders the Columbia, we stopped and checked out a neat covered bridge, it reminded me a lot of Vermont. Off of the 4 we jumped on the 101 South and made our way to the coast. Long Beach is a neat little peninsula so we drove to the end of that and found a campsite along the way. It was nice to get a spot on the beach, there were only two other campers there and we got wifi connection as well. It was cold but we did a nice walk on the beach.

The following day we road the 101 South across the Columbia into Astoria. It was cool to be able to ride on the huge bridge that I was only able to see when I went through Astoria the first time around. The plan was to eat at the Drina Daisy, a Bosnian restaurant a fellow expo user recommended to me. Around lunch we rolled into town only to find out it was closed, boohoo. We drove about the town and found a little restaurant down by the pier, "Wet Dog Cafe". The title was about right as it had been raining all day. It was a nice place with viewing windows to the river, we got a table with a perfect view of the large commercial boats and the river. I for once got the clam chowder and a sandwich, it was delicious! After lunch we stopped and did some laundry and headed back to Portland.

SL's trip was coming to an end. We had stayed the next couple nights at my buddy Adam's house in the driveway again. SL wanted to check out the farmers market on Saturday so we headed down to the University where it was located. It was filled with vendors as any farmers markets, we gobbled home made bagels and I picked up some veggies for future dinners. It's always nice to see local farmers showing off their goods. There was even a film crew there filming for an up and coming movie.

On Sunday we headed out to see the Japanese gardens. This was something Adam had recommended to us in the beginning of the week so we wanted to make sure to see it before SL's departure. It cost $12 per person to get in but was well worth the money. It was a beautiful park. They had all sorts of Japanese trees, cool bambo sculptures and waterfalls with koi ponds at the base of them, a true tranquil spot.

After the gardens we got lunch then I dropped SL at the Airport, I'm not sure when I will see her again. She is impressed with Portland and is thinking about making a move there at the beginning of next year. Who knows we both may end up at the same place again. After the airport I stopped to see a friend who bought a house here, he lives in California but is taking advantage of the cheap housing market in Oregon. Tomorrow I will head out of Oregon, I really enjoyed this state!

Love the tattoo! Looks like it came out really good. Oh about Mcmenamins, we actually passed by one and I pointed it out when we first got into downtown Bend. Very cool place. I've actually heard of that Kennedy School from Adrian cuz he just came back from Portland. That city rules.

Keep on truckin'!

That's funny, I pronounced it Or-i-GON for years but now switched over to Origin, you will never win the battle over the west coasters with pronunciation. I'm in Bellingham, Washington at the moment, will be in Vancouver for a couple days then back to Bellingham again for thanksgiving with a friend.
