33's & Running boards?

Hello All,

I would like to run 33x10.50R15 or 255/85R16 tires, but my wife and kids (4 & 6) like having the running boards. It looks like the 33's would fit, but I'd like to hear some first hand experiences (if there are any).

Has anyone tried to fit 33x10.5 or 255/85 tires with the running boards still installed?

Thanks for your time,

Clem

Thanks to off-roader for the insight.

Now I guess is the really question. Where do I go to buy the 33x10.50R15 or 255/85R16 tires and have them installed?

The shops I've tried say they won't mount a tire more than 3% larger than stock. How do you guys get around this rule/policy? Take in wheels only (i.e. removed from vehicle)? Tell them it is lifted (even though it doesn't need to be to fit)?

Thanks in advance,

Clem

there are plenty of tire shops around town (sacramento) that will install that size on a stock truck. Try tirerack or any other online retailer that you feel comfortable with for tires.

eurosonic, thanks for the comment...So you buy online and then have them installed at one of tirerack's independent recommended installers? I'll look into that.

Anyone else mind sharing their experience having "over-sized" tires installed?

Thank you,

Clem

America's Tire will mount them. If the employee balks at first, just ask them to test fit it and you'll be willing to pay the mounting cost if it doesn't fit. let them know that you know dozens of Montero owners running 33's. Now bear in mind if your rim is too narrow for the size tire you want mounted (ex... 12.5" wide tire on a <8" wide rim) then most reputable shops will not mount them.

I've never had any issues with an automotive shop denying a tire size increase. They always warned me, but never out-right said no to me.

With that said a shop warned me when I went to a 31 inch tire over the stock which was only a .5 inch increase, I laughed when I left another shop 2 years after that with 33 inch tires that still fit with no issue.

I would say no wider than 11.5" the 10.5" tire I have now is perfect and I wouldn't want any other size for a width.

@ off-roader: Thanks for your comments. I'll give that a try at America's Tire

@shov3lbum: Thanks for your comments. Did you go to independent automotive shop for tires or chain (i.e. Big O, Les Schwab, etc.)?

Hey!! I have the 2000 Dakar Edition that came with aluminum wheels to Puerto Rico, and to be honest, I prefer the 32' because the lose of power is not that noticeable, it handles great, fit without any problems and looks just perfect!! I lifted it up, installed Rancho shocks, and ready!! check the photo...Dakar 2000-1.jpg

A local chain, if that makes any sense haha. I was serviced at a shop that has tons of locations only in northeast Wisconsin, van Zealand's. Good guys, have been back since.

The first time I upped my size I also went to an independent local chain, called foxs tires I think. I tend to avoid major chains.
