just thougth I'd share my thougths 96 trooper modified lockers etc..I went to 255/85-16 from 33 12x15. rides better on the road tracks better. Also since the trooper is no powerhouse the thin tire just seems to work better with the drivetrain JMHO

I'll be running 255/80-17 on my next vehicle. Thinner tires might not look as cool to some, but they tend to work out better off-road and sometimes on-road (MPG especially) depending on the vehicle. There's a reason Land Rover ran 7.0R16 (approx. 215/85-16) and 7.5R16 (approx 235/85-16) on their Camel Trophy trucks.

Expedition West has a white paper on their site which has some good info on the advantages.

Question on different manufacturers, anyone making an E range? I would imagine they're all D range? How are they handling on heavier vehicles?

Well, a little google searching yields good answers.. The Toyo M-55 is an E range tire. Very neat...

LT285/75R16 126/123M E/10 309180 7.5-8.0-9.0 33.2 11.3 19

They appear expensive though.. The Dunlop Rover and a few others are D rated which is fine for most folks...

Here is a good thread about this tire size for heavier pickups such as a Super Duty or a Duramax Chevy:

Those M55's look like an excellent tire for a high-weight rig. I noticed a decrease in mileage this past weekend on my first run with 285's and am certainly keeping my eyes open for an alternative. The 255 in a E load range may be a good choice if the 285's eventually end up losing enough favor with the MPG gods...thanks for the link!

While I prefer a load-range-D 255/85R16 (3,000-lbs per tire!) load-range-E 255/85 seems to be the future:

Toyo Open Country MT
Toyo M55
BFG KM2

all are load-range-E.

Question on different manufacturers, anyone making an E range? I would imagine they're all D range? How are they handling on heavier vehicles?

That looks similar to what I am running on my older 1st Gen. I run the same rims along with the larger rotors, calipers and auto hubs from the late model.

Would really like that exact tire size but don't think my 4-cyl would like it. I run 245/75 16 E load rating.

Narrative/story on those Toyo ATs?

April this year., Three Rig's out. In the Dirt from Barstow to Primm. Then From Primm to Death Valley and repeat going back home. I started with those AT's with about 20-30% tread and thought I was good to go.

Two Flats. One Spare. Drove as long as I could till I heard Rocks contacting the underside of the Rig.

On day two limped into Henderson and got the BFG's E-Load rated.

I was not the only casualty. FJ with BFG's and idiot friend who stayed in the lead rigs dust...Stupid.. he does that. Bent rims for him.. He found unused take off stock FJ rims on Craigs list in Henderson private party. Picked those up and installed at the same time as my BFG's

Was an awesome Trip.
Check the Pics.

Looks like a case of too much "soda" and testosterone, and not enough careful.....I'm just sayin'. Also, going on an agressive trail ride with only 20% tread left on your tire might be begging for trouble. I'd say the tire did exceptionally well considering it sounds as though you drove on it flat for miles...
