You should be able to see that the fab work is a little more involved than just welding six sides of metal together and drilling a hole for the fuel pump.

These are PLUG and PLAY and work with your ecm/emissions gear. I have not seen another replacement tank that for any modern Toyota that can match that. Until someone else comes out with a competitive tank the price is going to be high. But a 14 gauge steel tank, powder coating, aluminum skid plate, good welders and a lot of R&D is what you are buying.

FYI they are not 35gallon tanks they are 42gallon.

I agree - it's a bit pricey, but seemingly worth it. I followed the original post and the folks up there in Bend did a tremendous job on the project. Their customer service seems paramount, and they really seem to do top-notch work and have really utilized every spare bit of space to eek out those 42 gallons. If I had the budget for adding a tank this year, I would sign up in a heartbeat. For me, the Maggiolina trumps the tank for this summer's adventures. I'm not sure why people who aren't interested feel the need to chime in. If this deal isn't for you, simply click on to the next thread, but please don't make outlandish claims on how overpriced this particular tank is. They have put a tremendous amount of pride and workmanship into it, and that isn't (nor should be) cheap.

Wow, that's an understatement! That thing is beautiful! You could still probably make one of those one your own for less....assuming your time isn't worth anything at all! That's always the big problem with doing things yourself, isn't it?

Cost of materials and fabrication and made in the USA... I don't think that's too out of line.

Weight:

The new tank with the skid plate and pump is said by CES staff to be "less than 90lbs" MINUS the 20lbs of factory plastic and brackets and you have and EMPTY difference of aprox 70lbs.

FUEL IS HEAVY- now matter how elegant/simple/cheap/expensive the tank the fuel is what weighs the most. Aprox 7lbs a gallon. With a total volume of 42 gallons you are looking at a full weight of 294 lbs of GAS. However the stock volume is 21 gallons of gas at 147lbs. so subtract that out and you have 147 extra pounds of gas.

So to safely carry and extra 21 gallons of gas cost you an arm and a leg but the total weight diffrence is only 217lbs.

For the Naysayers of CES:

For me the money and gear priority was range, I am using a stock suspension because I bought the tank instead. I see a lot of guys and girls that throw a lot more money at their rigs to make them look cool and don't have nearly the versatility of a stock truck with more than 500mile range has.

Want the cool lift and the bling wheels? Go for it! It's your money... Got a better idea that's cheaper? Everyone on this forum is all ears and will offer support (and constructive criticism) for you every step of the way. Show us what you got.

I wonder how this tank does in side impact or any impact that could shove the axle out of place and ********** the tank. there's really no space for the big tank to give in-case of accident... I might have missed it in the build thread but is there a bladder inside? I know the stock tank isn't all that but the plastics are less likely to rupture.. .

I would love a larger tank, but there is no safety data.. but also consider the fact that a small and very talented shop can't realistically crash test a Tacoma or two with the tanks in them to see what happens.. . but I still want one...

Yeah... and I'm wondering what would happen to this tank if a meteorite hit the truck. Not a really big meteorite, just a smallish one but one that was going really fast and it was hot and smoking and stuff. There's not a lot of room for that tank to move if a meteorite hit the truck.

Is there safety data available from any simulated extra-terrestrial projectile testing?

The bottom line is you set out to build a gas tank that is pretty cool and I am sure the RD and time is worth the price of the tank. For me I can't see where I need to go to have a 500 mile range for gas in the states or even Baja. Good luck with the sale and with the little bit of fab work I have done on my truck I appreciate the workmanship.

What annoys me is that we finally start to get some real innovations like this for the second gen Tacoma and people want to randomly criticize. I don't like every aftermarket widget I see but I don't troll threads looking to throw in my negative .02 either.

At the current exchange rate, thats about 390 US dollars. Installation was 500 Rand or $56 bucks. I asked the guy if the pricing was correct and he said it was. They install about 10 a month.

It seems it would be cheaper to figure out how to import them.

Are the HILUX and Tacoma trucks the same? Are their fuel cells interchangeable? You were just in a store in Namibia... LOL. Everyone knows Botswana is the place to go for truck accessories... duh.

It seems these are important questions that trolls should ask themselves before posting their observations. Just a suggestion...
