Ack! Torture!

Perhaps this is the engine that will be in the new Tundra? That at least would be a positive step.

My kingdom for a U.S.-legal 78-Series.

I seriously doubt we will see the smallish 4.4L motor in the Tundra. They need more size and torque for the target market.

They are, however, planning on using the 4.4 TD in the 130 Series replacement for the 100 series vehicles alongside the gasoline VVTI V8.

The specs for the diesel 4.4L V8:

220 kW = ~300 HP
580 Nm = ~425 ft-lb

It would actually fit into the Tundra engine bay, where as a 1HZ or 1HD would probably be too long. Who knows, maybe. BTW, the 1HD-FTE does about 200 HP and 315 ft-lb, so this is a significantly more powerful engine and probably a decent fit for a 1/2 ton Tundra, particularly if it gets 25 or 30 MPG. The target for the Tundra is not the same market as a F350, so I don't think Toyota or Hino needs to make a ~6L diesel for it. Ford, Chevy and Dodge have the 1 ton heavy duty pickup market pretty secure in the U.S. I think a smaller displacement diesel for the Tundra actually does make sense, because it would acheive decent enough performance and in the typical use as a daily driver it would get far better economy and that would be a selling point.

That's great news!

I'll be first in line if that comes to OUR reality. Of course, California still has to approve it. Thanks for the new dreams...
