4D3 injection pump questions - Pre-stroke code

As you may have seen in my signature I have been busy for the last several months transplanting a Mitsubishi 4D3 from a 2000 Fuso FE-SP into a 1994 FZJ80 Land-Cruiser. I am nearing the end of the conversion and finally took it for a test drive. Although it was a short test as the battery was held in by a ratchet strap, the ECUs were sitting on the floor, and only the driver’s seat was installed in the interior, I was very happy with the power and torque of the conversion. In such a light vehicle it really makes the Land-Cruiser move effortlessly, and I think it will get excellent fuel mileage – It has to be better than the 4.5L DOHC gas six.

I do have one recurring issue that I am wondering if someone has encountered before. The engine has the MD-TICS inline pump with pre-stroke control and an electronic governor. I am getting a fault code for pre-stroke rod position not being in sync with the required position (fault code 12). It only seems to happen when returning to idle, and it occurs infrequently. When it does, the red check engine light comes on and the engine goes into limp mode, and the revs are limited to 1800 rpms. Once the key is turned off and on, it works fine.

The service manual specifies resistance tests for the actuator and sensor, which I still need to perform, and it looks like the prestroke actuator is a pretty simple affair (motor with an encoder). It may also be a problem with the modifications I made to the harness (I shortened the leads, perhaps I have a cold solder joint in there somewhere). I suspect that the plungers are gummed up from the pump sitting a long time, and with some diesel fuel additive and some running, it may loosen up. I was just curious if anyone had encountered this problem before and what they did to correct it. I have not put more than 3 kms on it yet, but I think this is the nicest little diesel I have ever worked on. It’s quiet, powerful, compact, light, and heavy duty.

Just an update for the record, I had wired the prestroke cut relay incorrectly (swapped trigger and switched leads) and it now runs like a swiss watch.
