4M41 Engine Swap. Help a fellow dreamer...

Alright,

I know this is a debated topic. But I prefer diesel. There you go, I said it. I finally have the car I've waited to have for years (3rd Gen Montero). Long story short, I went to visit family members in the Dominican Republic back in 2006, and my uncle (wealthy guy) had (as he put it) a spare vehicle for me to use. it was a 2001 Montero with a 2.8 turbo diesel engine in it. I drove this thing close to 2500 miles in 2 weeks time, through all kinds of terrain; tropical forests, beaches, sand dunes, and rivers. It was the best experience I've ever had over-landing. The thing was a beast, but what i remember the most out of the vehicle is the torque of that diesel engine. As mentioned earlier just bought a 2005 Mitsubishi Montero with the 3.8L gas engine, and I am not very thrilled of its MPG or it's power. Don't get me wrong, its no slouch when you step on it, but it does not have the torque I remember, or the mileage of the diesel engine. So I want a swap.

I have been researching diesel engines available for this thing, and it is going to be hard finding one that ships to the states. I know its going to be expensive, but please don't destroy my dreams just yet.

Besides the concerns mentioned, here are my questions;

  1. Has anyone done this, that can give me some advice?
  2. Is my current transmission, a direct bolt-on to the 4M41?
  3. Is there another more "compatible" diesel engine I should be looking at instead.

I am aware of the emission problems this might give me, and honestly, I m not worried. I am moving to a state with no emission laws. I am also aware that parts would be scarce, and that worries me a little, but I can manage that. Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

I just returned from the land of Mitsubishi diesels this past Sunday (Thailand). I'll be back there in June. Let me know if you are serious and I can broker a deal for you.

Plh,

Thanks for the offer, any idea how much these can cost? I will let you know, once I'm done researching my options, my main question is on the tranny, would I have to buy a new one? Or can I use my existing tranny? Unfortunately no one has replied to my questions yet. Maybe I might be in he wrong forum for these type of questions. I'll PM you as I get closer.

Thanks again,

Toasty

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
The trans will work with a bell housing but the valve body is different, you should buy the diesel trans ass well

As Toasty mentioned, you will need the diesel transmission and controller. Prime time to do a 5 speed manual conversion. I have not costed the 4M41 over there. The old style 4D56 (not common rail) runs about $1500 plus transportation and finders fee.

Thanks for the info plh. Good to know on the tranny. Those old jet pumpers lack a lot of power, might as well keep the gasser, but it gives me an idea of where I stand (money-wise) on the CRDs engines.

a 4M41 will be WAY more than an old style 4D56. I think the only way to do this would be to buy and ship over a front cut. Not even sure that would be possible. Thailand is also a RHD drive country as well.
