4m50 turbo upgrade

Yes exactly....I do think a td05 is the answer though.

The exhaust housing seems so small that I would be terrified to use a egt gauge.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you upgrade the turbo to a proper size, without a chip for more fuel it'll spool slower than, well, slower than a FG climbing a hill... The stock td04 only comes online fully at 1500. Ie the stock fuel curve is extremely conservative.

Just a update.... Turbo shop laughed at how tiny the turbo was for a 4.9l.

The cost to upgrade the td04 and still have a td04 was not worth the money.

I did learn how ever that the 2008-2010 4m50 has a td05 so I think they learned the td05 was a better fit.

From my understanding but don't guarantee it that the 08-10 manifold is a t3 turbo flange. I ordered a gasket to confirm so just waiting for it to arrive.

Yes if you get the 08-10 us exhaust manifold.

Maybe wait till I get the gasket to confirm it's the td05 flange. If it is then it should be the same as a t3.

In that case I will prob be looking for a holset hy35 or hx35

Thanks, I'm not in a great hurry to actually do anything, just curious about what will work. If I do anything it would probably be a winter project.

HX35 and presumably HY35 are very old technology turbos. I know the HX35 came on early Dodge Cummins trucks and you can likely find one cheap, as the Dodge guys want to upgrade to newer tech or twins. Holset makes a great turbo, but there are better and more efficient turbos in that size for sure. Check junk yards for OEM applications, tuning shops that install or upgrade turbos and import car forums, where people seem to always have more money than brains, when modding some of these cars.
