4runner w/Wildernest

I have spent way to many hours searching for someone to do more than just wonder if and or how it could be done. I have ( for reasons I can only assume are rooted in self lothing,) decided to just build it myself! The plan is simple. Buy a 85' 4runner with low miles. Buy a Wildernest. Remove the 4runner top and replace it with the Wildernest. Sounds simple enough. The most foreseeable problem is the fitment of the front of the Wildernest and the cab of the 4runner.

Hope this works.

Good luck with the mounting. If you were closer I'd suggest a M&G to get some man power to help lift the Wildernest. I still suggest it, I just won't be stopping by. 1100 miles is just outside my fuel budget these days.

good luck.

my 4runner flippac plan hit the skids for now.

I may still do it but I have purchased a new truck, and am gooing to focus more on that one.

I had dreams of doing something like this with my old 85, but we went a different direction entirely.

Really interested to see how this turns out!

Keep us posted!

I too had this pop into my head when i had the 'nest on my old 80 pickup and bought the 4runner for my fam due to my son being born.

I like the idea and with alot of fabrication im sure itll work. I just had no fiberglassing knowledge to attempt this.

Good luck, ill be watching this. Id really like to see the finished project.

Thanks for the encouragment. I decided to get started this morning. With a little help from my wife I removed the top from the 4runner and replaced it with the wildernest.

The fitment.

I have measured the top and the 4runner multiple times and decided that inorder to keep enough head room for my rear passengers and to make the lines flow a little better, that I would have to raise the topper at least one and a half inches. I have used some two by sixes for now. But have plans to fab some risers out of metal for the final product. Sorry, but I'm having trouble loading up pics!:(

Files to big.

Ok, here's some shots with the wildernest. As you can see from the pics, I will have to do some fiberglass work on the front to fill the gap.

That's a pretty good fit so far.

Are you going to hack up the factory top to make the mating edges of the wildernest top? It looks like you'll be able to pull it forward some to reduce the overhang in the rear too.

The scary part.

Ok, I've reached the point of no return. I'm going to trace the cab outline onto the 'nest and cut a pass-thru out. This will allow me to move the 'nest forward and close the gap, limiting the amount of fiberglass work I have to do. No worries, if I screw this up, It's only $750.00 down the drain!

Yay--someone's actually doing it! I wanted to do this as well but went with a pop-up camper instead.

Nice work! You're doing the 1st-gen community a great service!
