I have only posted it here and figured to see what the consensus might be for how many days. I am planning on, at least, a long weekend and probably more.
I am thinking more into the Great Basin area than anything So. CA to try to draw folks from all over the West (& anywhere else that may wish to show up).
I'm not normally the type to decree "We're going here" with such a trip unless the trip will fail without that sort of thing. I'd much rather that the trip be organic than a guided tour. So we need more suggestions for a destination. I like the Alvord Desert suggestion, but I think that discussion of other places should happen.

Nevada would be of particular interest to me... Seems fairly central to the interested parties so far as well.
My vote for the "when," would be before gas prices jump back up to near $4 (potentially next Memorial Day). I'm sure the 60 owning, 15mpg getting crowd, would agree.

The NW Nevada/Steens region looks like it's off to quite a lead, especially since aside from my get-the-ball-rolling suggestions it's the only area proposed. At some point not too far off we'll need to settle on a firm place. Then we'll need, ideally, some local knowledge on when would be the best time to go there. Where ever "there" is. The earlier this is nailed down the easier it will be to plan the time needed and prep the 60's.
A PM brought up the issue of possibly needing a group permit. I'd like to avoid that. Can anyone confirm, as in not something that you've read in a forum somewhere, what that number is? I'd hate to have to go to RSVP's, but if there is too much interest and not enough time to get a permit (assuming that it's not the usual Gov't cluster) it may come to that.

In Utah the BLM permit process is 180 days long and is require for any commercial or organized group, and for other groups in sizes between 10 (Arch Canyon for example) and 24, 25 + needs an SRP. I'd say choose a couple of locations and call the BLM office, prefeable have someone familiar with the area call. You might find they just tell you to "show up and be safe". If any Utah locations are considered I would be more than happy to help out with the logistics, permits, etc.

Though it's highly unlikely I would be able to attend (due to the fact that I have two newborn-ish children at home), I am very excited to see the updates and the pics when you all do return. If you end up getting really organized and have some sort of raffle or such, let me know and I'll kick in some sliders or maybe a roof-rack.

There are a few on this board that are local to the area. You night also try posting on the Battle Born Cruisers of Northern Nevada forum, most of us are looking for any excuse to take a trip, as in do some scouting of the area with a group event in mind.ntsqd said:

If the numbers are fairly small there is a B&B with camping sites located at Soldier Meadows Ranch. The Ranch is within a few minutes drive of Soldier Meadows hot springs, Black Rock Desert, High Rock Canyon and Summit Lake. There are also some primitive BLM camp sites near the mouth of High Rock around the hot springs. The Ranch is just south of the border of the Sheldon Refuge.

I'd strongly push for being unorganized group of friends meeting in the desert. How many are going? Where?
If a permit is involved, I don't think I'd be involved. The BLM is onerous enough in that corner of the world. Steens & Hart Mountain are National areas with designated and dispersed camping all over the place - once you find it. I'd think a small group of unorganized friends is the approach for year 1. Even with strong conservation & tread lightly beliefs, I'd still try to avoid the BLM. Also the entire area is fairly delicate, we wouldn't want to overuse/abuse any part of it.
I know 98% of the ranchers/owner out in the Steens area. I'm pretty sure we could camp on private property - even with a big group (may need or want to offer something like help on a project, or cleaning up or something). I also may be able to arrange a legitimate/legal trip into the wilderness - depends on politics at the time because a group of us would not go un-noticed. Lastly, at least two ranchers out there are currently thinking about recreation/camping/BBQ events.

Consider these questions:
- Will you be rafting a river that requires a permit?
- Will you be traveling in a designated Wilderness?
- Are you charging a fee?
- Do you expect to make money on the event or is the fee to cover expenses?
- Will there be a competition?
- Will you advertise?
- Will you mark a course?
- Will you be expecting vehicles at your event? (How many?)
- Will your event involve public lands?If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you may need a permit from the BLM.
I read a little deeper into this, a "group" like a "fraternity" may need a "group" permit. Thus, as long as we are not a "group" or mark a course I don't think a permit is necessary.

B) Meet up and do a multi-day run, staying somewhere different each night?
