6x6 defender off road camper build

The build continues and will now start to pick up pace.
Today was spent installing the sound deadening into the main camper area, this needs to happen before the rest of the fit out can start.
At the same time as the interior fit out I am going to get stuck into refitting the gearbox and installing the new 4BD1T. We have a target date of 3 months to be on the road, given that it has been over 18 months to this point, it is ambitious but I am bringing in more outside help, otherwise it will never get done!

It's looking great! Good things take time so keep it up. I look forward to seeing the progress in the coming months

A couple of pics of other work on the truck; the slide out webber baby-q and the security screens for the camper section. These screens I designed, got laser cut, folded, zinc plated and powder coated myself.

A bit of progress and another shopping spree!
We bought an outside shower, a gas cooktop and sink combo and a fridge. We went for a virtifrigo upright compressor fridge with a remote compressor. Paid a little extra for the stainless finish.
With these we were able to do a bit of a mock up of the camper area and see how all the sizes 'felt', we are pretty happy with it.

I am also getting bored for searching for LR HD tubeless rims so threw on a set of the 'boost' alloys I had. Although only rate to 970kg, on paper that is enough for the truck's axle load rating.

As well as all the nice clean camper stuff I did get oily too and swapped out the leaky steering box for a good one I had on a donor range rover.

More next weekend...

Prepping the motor ready for install. Pulled the old turbo off and worked out everything I need for the EFR turbo I am putting in its place.
Also got the bed design down and had a chat to the cabinet maker about the cupboards. Countdown is at about 10 weeks, ambitious but we might just make it. Maybe.

Love it! Glad to see someone on expo doing up a Perentie. I was looking at a couple of ex-army ones before settling on my lazy axle Landcruiser. Got scared off by the north-of-4500kg GVM on the Army ones though and was a bit too worried about parts scarcity.

Looking forward to seeing how you build the interior!

More progress this week;
The firewall has been repaired where there were a couple of spots of rust and the badly rusted front gutter has been repaired/replaced. It was then painted in the same paint the body will be done in.
I also pulled off and cleaned/painted some steering components, put new bushes in the pan hard rod and replaced the steering damper.

This is in preparation to drop in the engine, which now has the gearbox all bolted up!

We will be getting it mod plated for a new GVM of 4499kg to keep it classed as a car. In terms of parts I have had no problem and have rebuilt pretty much everything. It is nearly all standard land rover or isuzu, the few things that aren't generally aren't wear out or typical failure items anyway. It could cause a few more problems in other parts of the world though.

Interior is about to make a big leap forward in progress with the bed and kitchen due in the next couple of weeks

Good to know. I get so many mixed reports about the Perenties; some folks I've talked to said they're a nightmare on wheels and others extol their virtues to the high heavens. All things considered by the time I look at ditching my landcruiser and swapping to a 6x6 the Army will probably have started selling off the Mercedes 6x6's they're now running.

Keen to see it! Long term goal for my rig is to rip the canopy off the back and build something a bit more 'liveable'. Our vehicles are both roughly the same size so I imagine most of the size constraint issues you'll run into will be similar for me down the track.

Updates coming thick and fast!

Trial fit of the security screens to the camper. Now looks like a riot van!
Also trial fit of the maxtrax on the roof.

Man that looks tough! If you're going to go that direction you'll have to keep with the riot theme and paint the whole thing matte black.
