7.3 Diesel what should be replaced

I bought a 2003 7.3 E350 a few weeks ago and quickly discovered why the price was so low, one of the injector cups was bad and it was getting diesel in the coolant so off to shop it went and replaced all injector cups and entire coolant system ;)

I dont think mine are that bad, just a leaking O-ring. No diesel in the coolant that I can smell

That's not possible. Everyone knows nothing goes wrong with the 7.3 PS, EVER. That's why people want $15,000-$20,000 for 15yr old 250k+ plus trucks. Saw a low mileage '01 last week the guy wanted $28k for.

The 7.3 is some pretty expensive koolaid, at least when it comes wrapped in a truck.

Not always that way... My 7.3 came wrapped in a Type 3 for less than the minimum charge for a diesel mechanic to work on a 6.0.

<1k usd at today's rates. 2.5 years later it's only needed a fuel bowl refresh and a glow plug relay... :D

I know, that's why I said "when it comes wrapped in a truck". I get the draw of a 7.3 but good lord. The premium some guys want is just ridiculous.

Ok, back on topic.

Really check out your electrical while you're in there. I mean main engine harness and especially all the connectors. The ones on my 7.3 (1992) were just dieing to crumble if looked at wrong. Still working on a permanent solution for the booty-fab holding it all together.

Well I dove into it last night and started removing stuff. Have one final bolt to remove on the passenger valve cover. What a pain! Still trying to figure out how to get to it.

I did find the rear most uvch to have a melted plug and pin, must be for two glow plugs as the van runs great.
hopefully more progress today.

Has anyone here actually done injectors? Removing that front VC bolt is a bear! Not sure how I am going to do it on the drivers side.

Ended up pulling the alternator and bracket to do the passenger side, don't really want to pull the AC to do the drivers.

I don't remember what I used but I know I didn't have to remove the compressor to get at it. It's definitely tight in there tho.

I was going to give you a hard time, then I remembered this is in a van :)

While I didn't personally do my injectors, the shop I used mentioned what a pita it is to do this job on vans. I believe they removed a motor mount in order to lower or move the block for clearance. Also at least one injector had to be removed/replaced by disassembling the injector in situ... But my memory can be foggy, so...
It was not cheap either, bill total was $4692 and change, including a few other small bits and bobs.

I'll have to see how it goes together on the passenger side, did you pull the solinoids off?

In a truck, this would be a breeze. Not so much in the van, plus I normally just do basics, this is a bit much for me.

Was that price with injectors? I'm just doing o-rings but they come out for that too. Makes the pain a bit better knowing I'm saving some money....but not skin. Damn my hands are in poor shape now.

Number 3 (I think) needs the firewall modified or the engine mount removed and the engine tilted so it can come out. Pulling the injectors is not a problem but removing all the crap to get to them is. If you can do it without removing the solenoids you are much better off. They just don't seem to be as good after pulling the solenoids and replacing them. Although that is how I have gotten around the firewall issues with #3 on one occasion.

Be warned it will smoke a lot when you start it back up. And I mean a lot and for a rather long time.

Well I pulled two solinoids to get them out. Have all four on the passenger side out. Hopefully they will be fine, never want to go in there again.

$4692 included the injectors, glow plugs, uvch x2, ebp sensor, cam sensor, a latch cable for one of the barn doors, and labor.

Justin at Azusa Auto in Irwindale, CA did it. He and his pops both drive 7.3 diesels.
