This is my 3rd gen cb setup since I am cursed by the gods of trucker ruled airwaves...
1st gen was a midland handheld with a black firestik 4ft on bandi rear door hinge mount...not much range or power....
2nd gen was a blue cobra handheld using a blue firestik 4ft on the same mount with the same coax...this one I would get a low swr, then it would mess up, not sure if bad ground or bad coax...
3rd gen is now this

I wanted something that was a complete package that I couldn't mess up the coax with my crappy soldiering, or bad ground on the mount or not enough ground plane, or low power handheld....
The nice thing about this setup is that it is only $75 total radio antenna and all.....it plugs into the cigt. socket (I will perm mount it & wire it in later) and with the mag mount there is no issue on the cable or ground plane.
The only downside it that nice model doesn't have the RF gain of the $20more model. If it was my first radio order and I wasn't more interested in ham I would have shelled out the extra dough....but I went cheap to get things going....

Now for the part everyone is waiting for...the results.
I still have 2nd gen installed so I could do I side by side and there is no doubt 3rd gen rocks! I hear way more, the swr only req a little adj of the antenna set screw. The sound quality is much better and range is excellent.
I am looking forward to a trail test this weekend and will report back on that.

Now I know lots of folks have the bandi rear door hinge mount and honestly I wish I could keep it and the blue antenna but the cb gods have spoken and it is not meant to be. I have someone who wants my 1st gen setup and I hope he has better luck with it.
If anyone would like a free blue cobra handheld and blue firestik just pm me and I hope you have better luck with it also.

I have to say that for $75 and no install req this is a killer setup that most anyone can afford and makes a huge difference in trail comm w/ groups & security when you are by yourself.

More results to follow....

enjoy

rock solid crystal clear small and very functional..
I have noticed lots of other offroaders use the little unidens since they are small and easy to mount.
I am thinking of switching to the 520xl for 2 reasons....RF gain switch which is nice when you are really close to others and PA...neither would make me tell others to get that radio instead...just some stuff I want to play with...I like the idea of having a speaker to hollar at others on the trail and call to attention for drivers meetings :)
In reality I still feel that the $75 combo is the cheapest new radio/antenna setup that a person can get that req little to no install and works great.
