80 series without roof rack...options ??

Looking to buy a series 80 and the one I'm about to make an offer on doesn't have a factory roof rack.
I can probably find a used factory one but is there a better option ?

I've read a lot of 80 owners talk about rust prone attachment points with the factory roof rack. Might be better off going after market?

AFAIK, roofless 80s are a rare find.

That roof rack is worthless. Just get a used yakima gutter mount kit or a real roof rack. I had a confer gutter mount rack on my 94 and use the yakima bars on my current one.

And yes, it does breed rust, the nutserts tend to come loose and it will fall off if you have anything heavier than a pillow on it. It is a port installed option, not a factory one.

Molon-How did the current owner fill the stock holes? I'd make sure he/she didn't do a half done job of covering over rust issues.

It never had a factory roof rack.

Bought mine with the OEM rack removed. PO used rubber plugs and silicone. Seems to be leaking now so I need to redo all of them.

My 80 has no factory roof rack. This is a good thing.

CHeck Bajarack's 80 series roof rack - very well done and lots of options.

My plan is to eventually go the Baja Rack route: remove the stock POS and plug the holes and replace with Baja's custom FJ-60/80 rack.

Mine did not come with one and I am very happy for that the stock ones suck. I plan on getting a Baja rack some day with gutter mounts.

Sweet, we'll have to get our 91's together. I'm a total LC newb as well and working on getting my two week old 91 baselined.

No rack and a better truck for it. I would have paid extra for it given the choice of that or a racked-truck. The port rack is mostly looks and the rust breeder that has been mentioned.

We can't fit a rack on the 80 the way the garage currently is, anyway, and it's a lot easier to camp out of our 1/4 ton trailer than climbing to the rack for gear. I'm not getting any younger. But still might get a rack once we get more time to travel more to handle bulky, light stuff. The heavy stuff will stay where it's easy to move, close to the ground.
