89 Isuzu Trooper Expedition Build Suggestions

I just finished the 3.4 swap on my 91 Trooper. I too am building it up to be my full time expedition/camping rig.

Up next are some Hellas for the roof rack and a winch. I have to mod my front bumper a little to fit the winch in there so hopefully by summertime I will be ready. I've also got a jerry can holder for the rear and just got some Scepter cans off eBay. :wings:

Is the carrier bearing the same as the center bearing? I think that is what Isuzu calls it. Mine was trashed too, and I replaced it with a new one from Isuzu. Cost about $65. I don't know if there is an aftermarket HD option.

I did install new CVs, Aisin hubs and Indy4x HD tie rods. So now, my only weak link is with the IFS. Eventually I would like to source a set of 4.77s (or better yet 5.38s) and lock up the rear.

The carrier bearing is the center bearing on the two piece drive shaft. The rubber cushion goes bad after 20 years. Three inch lifts just make it that much worse. They make a hella racket when they come apart!
Good luck on finding 5.38s for the front. I think the supply has dried up. To go that low you'll have to sas.
The IFS isn't all that bad. 33's and a it should be fine. Just don't get to bouncing when climbing outa something!

Yeah, that's the one I replaced. The rubber on mine was just about gone.

Really? So the 5.38s are too much for the IFS? I guess I better just find some 4.77s from an old RS then. :sombrero:

nfp, you're over on the planet arent' you? The IFS will handle way more than people think. I have abused the heck outa mine. If it gets to bouncing or gets some air, LET OFF! It's just that the gears themselves are near impossible to find. BUT, you can find them for a D44 front axle. Realy to go low, it seems you'd almost be better off swapping front and rear axles. Just not many options for the Isuzu. If you can get a couple of D44 or Toy axles for cheap, 5.38 or 5.29 gears are way easier to find.

Yeah, I'm on the Planet...thanks for the info. Right now I am just going to keep my eyes peeled for some 4.77s. I think I would be good with that setup and a locker in the rear. :smiley_drive:

I have the terra low in mine from indy 4x4 and it's dreamy....I don't rock crawl but I like having a mix of a good hwy gear and a lower off road gear. I also have and lock rite in the front (with manual hubs) and the limited slip in the back and both do well.

Yeah, you definitely get a few more options with the 2nd gens...
