You need a mike with a key pad to enter DTMF tones (just like using a phone, each key is a different frequency). I wonder if a hand held tone generator would work...

yes mark a handheld tone generator will work...the little numbers radio shack sold for years that the early phone hackers would use will do the trick.
But honestly a person is better off getting a mic with a dtmf keypad or if they have a handheld many of them have it on the body.
This is 1 reason why I started my explanation with "get out your radio's manual" so that folks would know how to do the steps req.
irlp is easy once to figure out the basics
Please continue to post any and all questions...I would hate to think someone was left out because they didn't know about something we could figure out

I have an Icom 706MkIIG. The standard mic is really simple, a PTT switch and an "Up/Down" frequency button and that's it!

Well I've been surfing the net this evening to see what's out there for a DTMF mic for this radio. It looks like an Icom HM-154T or a HM-118TM are the ones to get.

The thing that has me a little confused is that the HM-154T and the HM-118TM are also options for the Icom 2200 so it would seem that the DTMF mic (HM-133V) that comes standard with the Icom 2200 should also work on the 706?!? The way I look at it the mic needs to send the signals and get the power in the same way, regardless of what radio it's connected to. Does that make sense or am I confused? Has anyone tried this, or is anyone willing to give this a try?

If it does work I'd be tempted to get an Icom 2200 for the wife's truck (she doesn't have a licence but I do drive her truck occasionally) and use the mic for my 706! The list price for the DTMF mic is nearly 1/2 the cost of the entire 2200 with the DTMF mic included!!

If you folks are willing to watch for a mic I'd be grateful! Paypal is waiting!

I'd love to join up with you guys but I just can't get the setup right. If I find someone in my area (Agoura Hills CA) that I can hook up with and see how it works, that will be cool.

Cheers
Mark
