91 LC: Are they really this slow?

Have you considered the Montero with the 3.5? I love Cruisers as much as the next guy but the kind of money you are wanting to spend goes a lot further in the Montero world.

Funny you say that because when I was looking for a 4 runner 3 years ago I wound up with a 94 fzj80 because it was cheaper.
Yes, for your budget I would look at a 4runner, though the second generations aren't much faster than the truck you're looking at. Zj80s are grossly overpriced for what you get, namely high mileage, gas guzzling rigs that commonly have overheating issues. The 80 you're looking at might be OK if cats aren't required in your area. Terrible MPG though.

Haha...

Pretty sure tractors don't merge onto highways which is the point. No one is debating that more power is better for the highway...that's clearly not what the 3fe is about.

You can leave them to the rest of us...we love it for what it is, not hate it for what it isn't.

youre right. a tractor does not merge on a highway, because its mode of operation is torque multiplication thru low gearing. a tractor can get away with small a small short power band. an fj80 on the other hand, has to work on road too.

3fe + the 4speed auto ='s a lack of proper gearing or power to overcome it. the the 500 to 1500 more you will spend on a '93, is the cheapest 60 HP/tq adder you can invest in.

200-220 is about the bottom end for a well rounded med/full suv.

Thanks again guys. I drove a few other Land Cruisers, and a couple of 4runners, and even a RAV4... but I've determined that none of these are going to work for us. We'll likely be spending the majority of our time on paved roads, with the occasional dusty dirt road down the a deserted beach, as well as repeated trips to the hardware store (we're building a shipping container house) and airport to pick up friends and family. Not really much true off-road 4wheeling. With that in mind, we're going for a... wait for it... Astro Van. I had one before and I really loved it. Were on the look out now for a low milage AWD drive Astro. Hot commodity here in Colorado as most tradesmen drive them these days.
