92 F350 7.3idi 4x4 Pop Top Utility Truck- The Woolly Mammoth

Hello to everyone out there!
It's time to let my beloved Ford go on to its next adventure. I've been building this truck for about 4 years and its taken my family all over CA, NV, UT and Baja. We are ready for the next project have to sell one to make way for another.

The truck:
-1992 F350 crew cab w 7.3 idi diesel. One of the last mechanical diesels, requires but 1 hot wire to run. These aren't fast trucks, but they are damn near indestructable and dont care what you put in the tank. 194,091 miles.
-Rebuilt A4OD trans, fresh fluids.
-Dana 60 front, Sterling 10.25 rear.
-They don't make em like this anymore. Leaf sprung, heavy and stout, this is a truck made to work. It is simple, robust, easily repaired and tough. Simply put, it's an old workhorse that you'd be hard pressed to damage. An excellent overland platform for remote dirt, not Starbucks.

-Mods:
-Knapheide utility bed. Massive lockable external storage.
-Custom pop top camper built onto bed. Interior hosts queen size (+) bed that turns to couches. Can fit 2 motorcycles inside WITH cushions in.
-Awning
-094 Ford turbo w Flowmaster 40 series. Set 8psi
-BGF AT 315/75r16 w fullsize spare
-Jerries, shovel, high lift
-Lockable top box
-LED light bar on front
-Trans cooler w dual fans
-Old Skool Hydroflame furnace. Requires no electricity.
-K&N intake
-Facet lift pump, glow plug relay bypass, Powermaster gear reduction starter.Fires up no problem on the coldest days.

-Comes with everything needed to swap to 4.10 axle gears. Haven't got around to that.

Basically this truck needs nothing but the right kind of person. Sure you could fix it and make it pretty and quiet, or you could put diesel in the tank and go. For someone who wants adventure and doesnt have a mountain of cash, this will get you there (and probably farther then the spendy stuff). I wouldnt hesitate to take this thing anywhere. Gotta say, I love this truck!
Asking $12,000 obo. The Woolly Mammoth is located in Reno, NV. Contact Dan. Many thanks!

Hey Dan, thank you for the post. Very cool rig...could definitely see this thing in Baja! A couple of questions:

1. Do you have any pics of the interior that you can share? Both the interior of the truck and of the camper.

2. What is the current condition of the outside of the camper? I ask because there seems to be much more wear in the 1st picture and much less in the 3rd picture.

Hey thanks for the reply. I will take some pictures today that show everything just the way it is. I put a fresh coat of paint on the camper because as you noticed the original coat was peeling. The paint on this truck is nothing to get excited about tho, its rough.

All good, Dan! I look forward to seeing the pictures. :)

Here are some current pics. Like I said, if you want perfection, go drop $150k on an earthroamer. If you want to rip, get this.image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

The pop top is made of a Leer tonneau cover and the material is from a Lake Tahoe sailboat. Camper can be configured to sleep in a variety of ways. The original design intent was that 3 people could take dirt bikes anywhere in baja, dry camp for a week and sleep out of the elements. Then come home, take the cushions out, and have a functional work truck. Enjoy!

Super rad setup. I see that the craigslist post is down so it may have sold? Regardless, what's the overall length of the truck and rough weight as currently setup, if you know? Also any rough MPG estimation? Been interested in the utility bed conversions for a while...

Many thanks for the interest. Made a handshake deal on the truck over the weekend. The truck is just as long as it was when stock, about 20' stem to stern, with about 18' wheelbase. Recall it weighs in around 8800 lbs, without much in it. Shes a big girl!
The old idi averages 13 mpg on a typical camp trip with highway and dirt roads. The high speed runs just kill the mpg. Seen 18+ on extended dirt runs.
I recommend the utility bed 100%. In fact i wouldnt build a truck again without one. For an overlander the storage is unbeatable and keeping the stuff outside your living space prevents clutter. Also it easy to build on as its perfectly square. Its superior. You pay a weight penalty but the old Ford is so damn beefy you hardly notice. Go for it! It works for wildland firefighters and the like...

Congratulations on the sell, Dan! Was seriously considering, but currently too many COVID-related restrictions to get to you and view before buying.

That's awesome - thanks so much for taking the time to respond with those details. Best of luck with the new rig (curious to know what you're moving on to).
