93 2wd Truck

So, after looking at the recent 2wd drive thread, I am faced with a hard decision, do I want to keep my 93, single cab, 5 speed, 4cyl, 2wd truck that has absolutley NO mechanical problems all of the 180,000 miles that my family has had it, or do I want to upgrade to something like a 98 4runner?

So, need some opinions, and some options, the truck is already lifted, and has some all terrian tires, so basicaly its a prerunner, lol, so if I keep it the first thing would be a rear locker, so whats a good one for this truck? To be honest I dont even know where to start looking. Then sometime I would want to do a 4wd conversion, is there a write up for this model?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

My advice would be to think about what you want to do with/in the truck. If you're looking to get into rougher terrain than you may wan to consider getting into a 4wd. Not only would it give you the traction of front wheels spinning, but also low range. If you have no intentions of changing your driving lifestyle, than stick with your "little buddy". A locker or LSD can be of great help I, highly recommend the Detroit Trutrac. It works great even when the wheels go up, when you manipulate it with the e-brake. And it has great road manners, Lockers offer better off road traction but it's a love/hate relationship as soon as you hit the pavement.

Since a 93 4 cyl reg cab 2wd with 180k on it is probably only worth a thousand bucks or so anyway, why not just keep it? You can then get the 4runner or whatever and keep the 93 as your "beater."

I would love to do just that, that pickup has been awesome, but I'm in my first year of college and don't have the room, or funds to have 2 vehicles.

Then it would probably make sense to just keep the truck until you get out of college...;)

You must know my dad...

Well if I did decide to keep this truck, what would be the first order of business in expedition-ifying it? A topper or lock box would be nice to keep stuff safe cause the single cab has zero storage. It already has a 2in lift with 31in off brand all terrain tires, so what would be next?

I agree, keep it

Don't start college in any more debt... that engine will go for a long time with just oil changes. I would start looking on craigslist for a used topper, or a wildernest! Search on here for Safari Ranger (or whatever his name is) and look at the trip he did in the last 2 years in a 2wd Ranger... I would look at the Aussie locker for your truck. hth

That made me laugh out loud!!
It is good advice, even if it's not quite what you wanted to hear.

I'll second the TruTrac recommendation. The so-called "Lunchbox Lockers" (Lock-rite, Aussie, etc.) are less expensive, but IME their pavement manners are not in the same class as an LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and unless you're going mudding or rock crawling I highly doubt that level of traction is needed.
