93 Montero Build Thread

Hello everyone. Im going to start building up my Montero soon, plan many things for it. Im going to use this as a build log and general build updates.
Its a '93 Montero SR with the SOHC 3.0l v6, the old style one, with distributor (i know, not the "GOOD" one). Its sitting on Goodyear Wrangler MT/R 31x10.5 R15. I bought it for around 700 with a overheated engine, to a point where the exhaust manifolds had melted... Yup... MELTED... :Wow1: But anyway, rebored block, machined block face, new heads (since original heads where broken in two), new pistons, polished crank journals and new, i dunno, freeze plugs. (ran out of brain there) :smilies27: In total, its was about 1300. I have a 12 inch Blazer LED bar on the from bumper, purchased at autozone for 80 bucks.

In the beginning, wife hated the truck, because i had a 95 LS that blew up on us, not my fault, and she wont trust Mitsus... Give her time. Last week she was out of town so i deflowered it at the Azusa Canyon San Gabriel Valley OHV park, twice.

Sister popping out of the roof. Hopefully, overtime, i can turn it into a capable, well, more then it already is, overlander. :safari-rig:

Soon, im planing to install a turbo from a Subaru WRX, a TD04, probably pushing about 7 to 9 psi. Then Moving on to bumpers, front and rear, winch, roof rack, rocksliders, full or half under body skid plates, and im even interested in an exocage... dunno why... i find it intriguing. Then slap some OME springs, and shocks, body lift, either 1 inch or 2... Dunno yet.

Comments, questions, bashes, concerns, interventions all accepted.

CURRENT TURBO PARTS LIST:
TD04 Turbo off a 2000ish impreza $35
Intercooler off craigslist $25
6g72 Exhaust Manifold Flange from Mendrel Bends $44.59 Shipped

Welcome, no I'm not stopping you for anything. You had me at Turbo from WRX, in fact you should skip the rest and jump straight to it lol.

I pretty much have it figured out, i have the turbo and down pipe flange, intercooler that can fit by just relocating oil coolers, will have to make just passenger side manifold. Will be controlled by Megasquirt 2, along side the OEM ecu for accessories. Hardest part will be running the intercooler piping without having to modify much. Intercooler will be installed right where the stock trans and eng oil cooler are, they will be relocated downward.

Nice rig, welcome to ExPo. Seeing that you're in Los Angeles, what would be your plan for dealing with the smog check after you install the turbo. Just wondering...

Take it to the referee and try to get it certified, if all else fails, I'm a state certified smog check technician... so I'm not worried...

Awesome! Can't wait to see it when it's all done. I'm from LA also, if you want to get together and do some wheeling sometime, hit me up

Now I've been meaning to ask, on a 93 there is this thing.

How would I body lift with that, there is one on each side.

Awesome will do. I might do a Death Valley run around September and probably Big Bear October or November

Take the bolt out, lift the vehicle, put bolts into spares pile. Supposedly those brackets would keep the body from flying off of the frame in a collision. I say "who needs 'em?"

I thought of doing that, but wife said, "If they made it with those, there must be a need for it." Well, seeing as newer model year monteros dont even have those, ill do that. Take them off, put them in a bucket.

Relocated one of the 2 cooler, transcooler dropped 6 inches. Will be making bracket once i relocate engine cooler, both will be mounted solid.

Will be mounting engine oil cooler right behind trans cooler, making enough room for this.

Update: Ordered exhaust header flange from http://www.mandrelbends.com for a total of 44.59 with shipping. I will be visting King Metals to buy the butt weld tee and 90 degree schedule 10 steel tubing for the log manifold that will be fabricated for the passenger side, where the turbo and crossover pipe will be conecting to. Anyone know where i can buy a 2 into 1 merge for a good price, i found some at coneeng that im looking into.

So you know about the codes that prevent Mitsubishis from passing smog! Lots of folks sell them because their techniction does not know about it and they can't get their cars to pass.
I presume your engine is the SOHC 3.0, the turbo should be a nice addition.
Later if you need more crawl ratio, check out Eurosonics thread on his build. He is installing a NP231 from a Jeep Cherokee. The Cherokee uses the same AW4 trans as the Mitsubishi, so you grab the adaptor, reluctor, sensor and t-case and it all bolts right in. Drive shaft modification required.
There is also the 4.90 gears available from Montero Sports.

^^^^ Az Crew has pioneered over the counter near indestructible driveshafts already for this swap. BUT for your truck there is much much less work involved, it's a bolt on for you. No adapter, no pulse gear modification, just get the t-case with fixed yokes and the proper speedo gear for your truck order the driveshafts and slap the new setup in.
